>> Reporter: well, the superior court of justice for ontario, imposed a deadline that the federal government has to meet to make sure that these changes are done, and that deadline is june 19th. Less than a month from now. So the government really doesn't have a lot of time to pass this legislation, and with this minority government, the minority parliament situation that we're in, it would be surprising to see this legislation go from, you know, first reading all the way to royal ascent in such a short time. We know that this bill has support from the N.D.P. and the green party. We don't know where the conservative party stands on this yet. We did hear today from advocates who are behind the support of this bill who say that it should receive cross-party support, and they're asking for all members of parliament to support this proposed legislation. Let's take a listen -- >> We've gotten citizenship for all kinds of people. When they get in touch with me, I never ask them their politics. They're either canadian or they're not. That's the glue that binds us together. Canadians have not been very good at standing up for one another, so this citizenship is not partisan. Citizenship is who we are. I don't care about your political party. So everybody should be supporting this bill. >> Reporter: so the clock is ticking on the federal government to not only to introduce this legislation, which it already has done -- this proposed legislation -- but to actually pass it by june 19th. That deadline set by the ontario superior court of justice. The immigration minister marc miller was asked several times during today's announcement about what the federal government's plan is to make sure that this legislation passes before that deadline. Now he said that the government may ask the court for an extension, but he did say that it's an extension that he doesn't want to see lasting too long, because he says that the government wants to see these changes implemented as soon as possible. >> Jacqueline: okay, olivia, thank you very much. That's olivia stefanovich in ottawa. >>> We have awarded the city of toronto the 14th wnba franchise. ( ) >> Andrew: canada is getting its first professional women's basketball team. Toronto has been granted an expansion franchise with the women's national basketball association out of the U.S. here's some of that announcement from this morning. >> I will never forget last year, the scotiabank arena when I attended our toronto game. And lots of people coming up to me and saying thank you for making my dreams come true by bringing a wnba team here. This is when I knew that this was the right place as we're thinking about expansion. And the tens of thousands and hopefully the millions of girls that were inspired that day is just something that you cannot replicate without bringing a team here to canada. So with that I am honoured to officially announce that we have awarded the city of toronto the 14th wnba franchise. [Cheers and Applause] >> Andrew: so for more on this story let's bring in shireen ahmed who first broke the story that a team coming to canada a few weeks ago. So, shireen, take us through the details about the new wnba team. >> Reporter: it's a great day for sports in toronto and canada. And toronto awarded the 14th wnba team. They will start their season as I reported in 2026. So it's getting further than it will be, but time will pass. And also the practise facility we know now that will temporarily be at the gold rings centre in the university of toronto until a practise facility is built specifically for the team. We know that teresa rush is the president of the orginisation. She was named publicly today. And we don't have any other details about any other staff, but it was a pretty great day all around. >> I'm your woman, right, and I get to call the shots. So we heard a lot already and this is not just toronto's team, this is canada's team. And we're so excited for the girls and the women of canada and the people that love and support them, who love and support us. We're going to play across canada in different markets and we look forward to doing that in a way that no other professional sports team in canada has ever done. These games are going to matter and we can't wait to see you there. >> Reporter: one of the other things that they announced this morning is that the wnba toronto team will actually play games in different markets like vancouver, and montréal specifically. And they have had preseason wnba games before in edmonton, but they're testing out the market availability and potential there. So there's more that will be said and explored in terms of expansion team and as I said it's a great day for sport in canada. >> Andrew: it sure is. And though this new toronto team was officially announced today, it's been a long and a dedicated process to get this done, right? So talk to us about that. >> I think that it is really important to remember that the history of canadian women's basketball and you have seen legends in the plans. And tammy sutton-brown was on the panel after the initial announcement and I think that one thing that people do is that they sort of forget that -- that the foundations were laid, and -- you know, it's brick-by-brick and, you know, people doing this work -- the scholarship and the academic research. You know, women working in media and sort of building this up. This didn't happen overnight and it truly was moving the mountains and you know the commissioner of the wnba said that. It was like moving a boulder uphill. And sometimes that's how it is in women's sports but when you get there, it's pretty incredible. >> I have been inspired by the nba greats but these young women never saw someone like themselves on the stage playing the sport they love. Now the wnba has changed all that. And today we're changing that here in canada. Our team will complete the pathway for women in this country. They will see heroes that look like them in person and on the air all summer long. >> Reporter: I think that the

really important part here too is that this only accentuates and amplifies basketball for girls and women in canada. We have semiprofessional leagues across the country and having an expansion team will only help to amplify the canadian national women's team who are headed to the olympics. And the teams recently announced and the women's team going to the olympics as well. So it's a very important role, it's another important piece in this great puzzle. >> Andrew: so, say shireen, briefly, and listening to larry tanenbaum, it's about two years from now is what we expect? >> Reporter: exactly. Maybe it will be on two years from now, and I'll be reporting what it felt like to be at the first game and the president teresa resch said that it will be the greatest day of her life and for many in the sports realm, it will be the same. >> Andrew: shireen. Thank you. Shireen ahmed from cbc sports. >> Jacqueline: still ahead, the edmonton oilers begin their series against the dallas stars tonight. They're on the verge of making it to the stanley cup finals for the first time in 18 years. We'll take you to dallas for a preview coming up on cbc news network. -He's thinking about his diabetes.
