They don't want the power play to take over. Discipline is a big part of it. [ ] >> Announcer: starting in goal, from minnesota, number 29, jake oettinger! >> Kyle: everything is bigger in texas including the stakes as

the oilers are back in a conference final. Connor mcdavid had that great line that they know how to make it stressful, and it certainly has been for stuart skinner at times in these playoffs. The aftermath of punching their ticket here was that long hug between skinner and calvin pickard. Skinner said it felt like it lasted five minutes, and a quick turn around now from comfort back to tension with a fresh slate here in dallas. This journey is never done alone, and the stars sure do know that. A team that's been a perfect blend so far of the old guard and youthful exuberance. The tone was set at the start of their year with this motto, a little less for a lot more, a team-oriented goal that has driven their season and hangs on the wall next to the door to the dressing room signed by all the players and coaches as pete deboer said whoever is the last team standing, the only stat they care about is 16 wins. Game one, 8 down, 8 to go. >> Announcer: to honour the men and women who have served our country, please rise if able and welcome to the ice our sports radio 697 and 1310 the ticket and city credit union hometown hero of the game. United states army staff sergeant daniel viegas. [ Cheering and Applause ] and now to sing the anthems of two great nations, our own selena rae o canada our home and native land true patriot love in all of us command with glowing hearts we see thee rise the true north strong and free from far and wide o canada we stand on guard for thee god keep our land glorious and free o canada we stand on guard for thee o canada we stand on guard for thee [ Applause ] oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming and the rocket's red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave [ Cheering and Applause ] >> Chris: in the late 90s through the turn of the century, it was an annual playoff matchup. Fresh off a seven game series win over vancouver, edmonton is seeing stars again. Game one of the western conference final from american airlines centre as the oilers take on the central division champion dallas stars. In goal, stuart skinner won both starts against the canucks after a two-game reset stopping it had stopping 29 of 32. He's 2-2 in his career against dallas. At the other end, jake oettinger held colorado to a single goal in three of the final four games in round number two. 1-0-1 with a .932 save percentage against the oilers this season. Evan bouchard, first defenceman to register 20 points through

two rounds of the stanley cup playoffs, and there's chris tanev who has put the d back in dallas, leads the stanley cup playoffs in blocked shots with 56. So how's the west going to be won? Connor mcdavid out there along with ryan nugent-hopkins and zach hyman who has five goals in games won in these playoffs. Matt duchene on the ice, mason marchment out there as well with the veteran joe pavelski. Puck played into the corner, it will come back to the line. Tanev shot fronted by mattias ekholm. Bouchard ahead took a hit from marchment. Here's mcdavid spinning. Connor mcdavid tried to feed it across, and that hads cut off by pavelski into that opening shift, and it's bounced down on skinner. >> Craig: always good to get a hit or be hit early on, very different look when you've got new opponents and new matchups. It will be fun to see how these coaches are going to navigate this first game. >> Chris: there's leon draisaitl knocking down a puck in the corner, draisaitl with points in all 12 oiler playoff games so far. Desharnais back in his own zone, young wyatt johnston on the forecheck. He's been quite a story this season, he led the stars in goals and is second in points in these playoffs. Out there along with another youngster, stankoven as it comes back to the line. Thomas harley with it and that's knocked away by evander kane and up into the dallas bench. >> Craig: well you knew coming in that both these teams trying to establish some sort of physical presence. No surprise on home ice it's marchment here, gets the hard hit on bouchard, surprises him there. Expecting maybe a fly by, instead gets the hard hit and you know, that's what playoff hockey's all about. It will be fun to watch how these individual matchups start to heat up as the game goes along. >> Chris: oettinger out to play the puck, there's former oiler alexander petrovic to centre and ryan mcleod back. Jamie benn, the stars captain tracking him, cody ceci ahead and derek ryan bumped as the puck went down into dallas ice and sent back out. Look out, dadonov was poking at the line! Stopped, and a rebound stopped! Big early start for stuart skinner after a breakaway for dadonov. >> Craig: how's that for settling your nerves as a goaltender? In all alone, not just the one save but the second save maybe even better than the first. >> Chris: now it's connor brown on it for edmonton, feeds back to bouchard at the line. Back in around behind the net, and that puck just played past brown nearly with a steal as it's flipped away to centre. A good fourth line for edmonton, gathered some momentum in the last round against vancouver. Here's carrick back in. Checked by esa lindell, up along the boards. Carrick again into the corner it goes, janmark the former dallas star. Played three years here. Lindell will take over and an outlet for miro haiskenan who we'll see a lot of in this series. Duchene on the move, following up a chance there for pavelski knocked down. Pavelski checked by mcdavid who moves it ahead and now on the move is ryan nugent-hopkins, the game winner in game seven in vancouver. And nugent-hopkins with five points in the final two games. Nurse will flip it back in, after it goes hyman. Knocked away from him by lindell. And flipped ahead to centre for marchment. Well he doesn't get out of the zone. Here's mcdavid, across! And nugent-hopkins sent that high. Had a little room, that was in our line of fire, and there was some room on jake oettinger there. >> Craig: seen four times already dallas just flipping the puck out. Any kind of pressure the edmonton oilers trying to establish in the offensive zone, an easy outlet by dallas flipping and getting it out of trouble. >> Chris: there's draisaitl to the left side for evander kane. The return feed didn't work, it will be kept in at the line. That bounced off a body into the corner. Kane will send it around to the near side. Cycled back by holloway and kane for draisaitl. Trying to feed the point, cody ceci who opened the scoring in game seven. That shot hit a leg. Here's holloway looking for kane from a sharp angle. Almost found something short side. Good pressure by the oilers here, holloway wins a board
