and work in the nail salon. So he wasn't too happy about that. He did come in. He saw that there was somebody helping his mother there. He decided he went out early. Then he thought he wanted to leave. He was going to tell her that evening when he got back, she was going to move in with his aunt. He had his bags packed and was ready to go to change his life around. So his mother gets home just after 8 as we mentioned, the security video showing. When she gets in the door, she said he told her that he was going to move. She became enraged, said that she was going to kill him and his aunt if he ever left. Things escalated. Ly said he went back to his room. His mother continued yelling. She shouted if you don't come back right now, I'm going to beat you to death. She said he took his bags and was going to leave. He also took a hunting knife with him. He said he was bringing it out to the entrance to show his mother he was serious about leaving. He thought it might scare her. So then he continued to try to move past her. And he said that she would not budge and that he then had to endure some punches from her and that he said when his mother didn't move out of the way, he saw red, took his knife, and started swinging it catching her in the neck. Ly told the court he couldn't remember how many times he stabbed his mother. After it happened he zoned out in his room for hours listening to music. He didn't even believe it was real. His telephone, his cell phone showed he made three calls to his mother after she was dead. He said that eventually it did sink in that -- what he had done. So he ended up cleaning up the mess, the blood, and that's when he began putting her body in the garbage bags. >> Kelda: traying -- trying to dispose of it. >> Reporter: trying to dispose of it. Both the crown and defence called their own psychiatrist to the stand to testify. Only one of them actually assessed ly. What did they have to say? >> The defence called a doctor who diagnosed dallas ly with posttraumatic stress disorder due to the abuse he had suffered as a child and that at that moment, he was in distress at the time he was triggered by that. But a crown psychiatrist, dr. Yosip reviewed patel's report and myself diagnosis. She testified she believes dallas ly was severely and emotionally physically abused throughout his life. She didn't deny that. In her opinion, his symptoms only appeared after he killed his mother and that it was not due to child abuse. In her view, ptsd is when someone relives the trauma over and over again. She didn't believe from what she could read that dallas was experiencing memories of child abuse. In fact, he was experiencing trauma from the nightmares he had over stabbing his mother. And she said he killed his mother in a particularly gruesome way. Following this, he had flashbacks he's being chased by zombies in the eaton centre. That's in line with the terrible way his mother died and that following his arrest he was actually at the eaton centre when police came and found him. So she believes that it was only afterwards after the killing that he was suffering from ptsd, which is a major part of a jury deliberation because the judge has said you have to try to get into dallas ly's mind to find out what he was thinking at that moment that this happened. >> Kelda: jasmine, thank you so much for taking us through the case and the trial. Organizers at the hot docs film festival says they will close. This year's festival saw higher revenues than expected and near pre-pandemic attendance. Hot docs says this financial situation remains serious. Cbc's senior entertainment reporter, eli glasner joins us now. The hot docs film festival wrapped up earlier this month. Organizers say it was successful. They find themselves in this situation to temporarily lay off staff and close the theatre. What else can you tell us about the financial situation? >> It's confusing. Maybe counterintuitive. They are carrying a big deficit. At the same time, the numbers seem to be going in the right direction. We were there for the launch. We had 274 screenings, people travelling from across the country including the states to see documentaries at the bloor cinema and other locations. As you said, the box office actually exceeded their targets by 12%. Again, it is that deficit. It is basically a cash flow crisis that they're facing. Let me read you what they announced today saying we made the decision to temporarily close hot docs for approximately months. During this time the leadership team will undertake an extensive review... They are going to close their doors. Not going to be screenings. They are laying off staff. We don't have an exact number to

try and find a way back. I had a chance to talk to the president, marine nelson, president based in baltimore, who commutes, flies here to toronto to manage hot docs. We spoke back in march. Even back then, there were warning signs. As the president she was saying that there are serious concerns about the future of this organization and that hot docs was struggling against forces that a lot of festivals are. Here's what she had to say. >> We're in a post pandemic period. We're still experiencing the hangover of the impact on all of our operations. For two years, we shuttered our cinema. For three years we weren't able to have a full in-person documentary festival. All of those impacts are now showing up especially now that there are any sort of pandemic supports. >> One of the reasons nelson was brought in was to get hot docs back on its feet. The indicators look good. She describes the plane as taking off. The numbers are going up. They were running out of runway. Even back then, I asked is there a future? Do you feel confident about the future of this organization that has existed for over three decades? Take a look. >> If I'm a betting woman, I'm going to say if the forces come together, whether that's support from government, private sector support, you know, certainly our donors. I believe that they're going to show up for this organization. >> But that government support did not come through. The federal government has announced $23 million to the toronto international film festival but nothing for hot docs. At the same time, behind the scenes, many reports of turmoil, there was an exodus of employees resigning just before the launch talking about a toxic workplace. They lost their artistic director just days before the festival launch. Barry and another board member also left for personal reasons. A lot of turmoil behind the scenes. Also a major cash crunch.
