The U.S. weather service says it's part of a wider system that swept over the U.S. midwest. Cbc's richard madan is following the story. Richard, it's been a bad year in terms of damage done by the storms. What can you tell us about this one? >> Reporter: this one was quite devastating. The storm season, especially in the midwest, appears to be starting earlier. The extreme damage from the deadly tornado made the small town in iowa, town of greenfield, almost unrecognizable. People in that tight knit community are not only mourning loss of neighbors but they're looking at massive recovery and rebuilding under way. Governor kim reynolds describing a central part of her state as flattened by the tornado's widespread devastation. Listen. >> It's gut-wrenching. I think there's more debris and just more impact -- more impacted here. It's horrific and hard to describe until you can see the devastation. But at the same time, I can't begin to tell you how heartwarming it is to see everybody out helping each other. >> Reporter: the governor says it's hard to describe, but you could see it. Take a look at this drone video that shows the aftermath in greenfield, an hour away from des moines. You could see the tornado's path of destruction, ripping through homes, upending cars. Snapping trees. Entire neighborhoods gone. Dozens injured. Authorities have confirmed fatalities, but won't give exact figure yet. The governor says that's because recovery efforts are still under way. Take a listen. >> It's still a search-and-rescue. We are going to continue to do everything we can to monitor the area. >> It's still a coordinated search. That's the methodology we're looking at with it being controlled who is allowed in at this time. It's still a search mission as far as we're looking to make sure all residents are accounted for when we have this many homes that have been destroyed and just fully demolished. We want to make sure every resident and person is accounted

for. >> Reporter: so, adding to these complications, is that the tornado knocked out the town's main hospital, forcing paramedics to take victims to other treatment centers nearby. Iowa's governor declared a state of emergency in the region, which unlocks state resources to help in the recovery and rebuilding effort. Now, today, crews were seen working to restore power to the thousands affected. Lifelong residents say they've lost everything. >> I heard like a train. A train. And then, insulation came from the basement, one of the windows and came in. I heard it and knew it was hitting. Devastating. [crying] >> I've lived here all my life. I'm praying everybody was safe. Everybody is safe and nobody got hurt. >> Reporter: so the state has since requested president joe biden approve a federal disaster declaration, which directs federal resources to help in the recovery efforts. I expect the president will approve that and sign it at any moment. Now, the storm may have passed central iowa, but it appears that more severe storm warnings have been issued stretching from texas up to new york. So, after one major storm hit iowa, it looks like the south all the way to the northeast, are bracing for what happens later today. >> Natasha: cbc's richard madan, in washington, thank you. >> Rep Michael j. Fox:When we see Team Canada on the world stage, we're witnessing pure greatness. What we don't see is their struggle. We don't see Maude Charron being forced to change weight classes after she wonOlympicgold. Hugo Houle persevering through the tragic loss of his brother. Or Andre de Grasse dealing with all the doubters. Including himself. What we don't see makes us who we are. We're all bravely facing the odds in our lives. Now bravery is our victory. - -[crowd cheers] Sometimes the difference between a summer road trip and the road trip of the summer is an ice cold drink from McDonald's. The prime minister of iraq greeting the new acting president of iran. Foreign dignitaries marked the death of the dignitaries killed in the helicopter crash. The political leader of hamas was present.

[speaking alternate language] >> Natasha: in addition to the five days of national mourning, the government has suspended cultural, sports, and artistic activities for seven days. >>> Let's dig deeper into the story. We want to bring in the human rights lawyer and frequent commentator on iranian politics. It's been awhile. Good to see you. >> Reporter: always good to be with you natasha. >> Natasha: the first thing I want to understand because it's difficult to get accurate information from inside iran. We are seeing images of thousands and thousands of people lining the streets as raisi's body is being taken back to iran. What do you take from the images? Does he have that kind of support from the country? >> Interview: I don't make of up images. Dictators of every stripe will try to put on a display, a show and bus people in. This is common practice in iran, where for state funerals of this nature, the regime will spare no effort to create large crowds, precisely for the consumption of western media, so it will look like the regime has a lot of support. The iranian regime is very, very unpopular at home. It's not to say it has no support. Obviously, there's some percentage, I don't know, 10-20%. It's hard to know exactly. But it's not a very popular regime at home as mass protests in recent years have shown. And there's been very, very low participation in its elections which means it enjoys very little legitimacy. >> Natasha: let's talk about raisi, the man, and what he represented for the regime and represented for the country for decades now. >> Interview: yeah, so I think for the regime, he was probably perfectly emblematic of what the regime was. Here's a man who got started in his early 20s right after the revolution. He served in the role of a prosecutor in various places. Responsible for the killing of a lot of dissidents, including in 1988 when the regime carried out mass killings, crime against humanity. He was in the thick of it serving in the death commission. He continued to be a henchman for the regime until he became the president. He didn't enjoy the particular skill other than brutality. So in that way, he was a perfect representation of what the regime was. For the rest of the country, I think he represented the problem with this regime. He was a brutal man. Didn't care about democracy. Didn't care about the demands of the people. And wanted to implement a very particular vision of a theocracy. >> Natasha: the indication from reports inside the country was he was going to be tacked to be next in line for the supreme leader. Where does that leave the supreme leadership at this time? >> Interview: that's a good question. Who the next supreme leader of iran is going to be is going to be difficult to determine. He was thought of as a leading candidate. Not the only one. I think the other person that's generally considered to be in the running is the son of the current supreme leader. That leaves the regime I think in a bit of a difficult spot. They have to -- the current leader is culminating in his mid to late 80s in poor health. So he's not going to be around much longer. They need a succession plan. I don't think they have clear candidates. His son is probably the leading candidate. That turns the republic into a dynasty dynasty government. It's not clear who the next supreme leader will be. I'm sure behind the scenes there's a lot of jockeying for positions to be able to take that role. >> Natasha: what often happens in these conversations about iran, there's parallels going on. One is what the regime want and one is what the people want. Could raisi and his highly documented brutality, is that an opening for civil society to rise up? Or for the countless young people who want desperately some change in the country, is this an opening for them? >> Interview: I would doubt this is the exact opening. I mean, the regime knows when there's sort of a vacuum like this, that there's danger. So they securityize the environment. They've got forces out in large numbers. They're ready to crush any dissent that will arise in the next little while. But as you correctly point out, there's anger in the population.
