in ontario. Give me the picture for ontario and tell you how calculate these grades. >> Ontario got a d-minus. Not the greatest score. You wouldn't want to bring that home to parents. We calculate the score based on four areas including people ease experiences of poverty. Nearly half of people until this country are feeling worse off financially than they were last year which was shocking given how people were people were feeling last year. The unemployment rate and food insecurity and legislative progress across the country. Where are province, where is the federal government taking positive action and where are they falling short? >> David: last week I was speaking to a group of non-governmental organization leaders and among that group were food bank leaders. They were describing how the situation before them and their time with these organizations had progressively got worse. Is that reflected in the numbers you're seeing? >> Absolutely. >> Far too many people coming to the doors of food banks. More senior, more folks with jobs. More people who have to turn to a food bank who never had to before because the stagnation is meet the high costs. >> Food banks were intend today be an emergency lever, not a solution. Do you think people see it as a solution and perhaps aren't as interested in responding to the issue at hand? >> This is why we did the poverty report cards. We never intend today be as relied on as we are now. I think thank goodness food banks are there. I don't know what foods would do if we didn't exist. We need immediate community supports but we take our role of advocating for change very seriously. That's why the poverty report card exists. We want add tool to compare across the country, which proves are getting it right and we could and find one so we built one. We think this tool will help provinces take action. We need to see more of that kind of progress in order for more people to stop peeping this pinch we're in. >> David: is ontario one of those provinces? >> Unfortunately, no. We're seeing a lot of inaction. A lack of focus on poverty reduction. In ontario we know especially in the urban settings the high costs are significant. People are spending astronomical amounts on housing. Ontario has a significant number of the people living in poverty in the country so it needs to be a legislative priority. We need to see progress. >> David: what would that entail? >> What we're suggesting is setting up strategy. Many provinces that have seen success have a poverty reduction strategy that galvanizes action, sets targets and holds governments accountable to citizens. Suggesting that ontario put together a poverty reduction strategy. We're asking they modernize social assistance so ontario works and odsb need attention. People are falling further and further into poverty and of course we need to see investments in affordable housing. >> Are you seeing receptiveness from the provincial government? >> I believe the feed ontario was in queen's park last week or a couple of weeks ago and had several positive meetings. We really need to keep the pressure on though. This is what -- what we're seeing across the country, it has to be an issue for all of us at citizens. That no governments can stay in power if they don't address poverty, that's when government also take action. Making sure everyone as citizens decides this is a critical issue. I'm hopeful in a way because this is an issue that affects so

many people. 44% of us are feeling worse off, this is an issue governments can't ignore. >> David: kirsten, thanks so much for your time this morning. A new tune from liza. This is "gasoline." Police say it's too early to tell whether the shooting is a hate crime. >> We're not going to ignore the obvious, what occurred here and the target of the shooting was. At the same time it will be wrong to just guess at this point. So we're going to go into this investigation with an open mind and the investigation will tell us what occurred here. >> Police have increased their presence in the neighbourhood and asking anyone with more

information to contact them. >> Multiple opioid deaths over the weekend have prompted a warning. Three people, two males and a female have died since friday in two suspected opioid poisonings in halton hills. Police say all of the deaths are being investigated by the office of the coroner and the one district criminal investigations bureau. 6:33. This is "metro morning" on cbc radio one.
