against the oilers. But a rare slip up by miro haiskenan almost opened the door. >> Craig: that puck took so long to get to janmark. He looked up and saw the number 4 down on his stomach. Don't see that from heiskanen. He's such a talented player, both offensively from the blue line and of course defensively. But that time got caught up on himself and oilers missed an opportunity there to take advantage of it. >> Chris: we first got introduced to miro haiskenan in the edmonton playoff bubble. 26 points, he loses this and maybe a break here! Here's warren foegele! And stopped by oettinger! [ Cheering ] what a chance for foegele to open the scoring. Back the other way it's dadonov swinging wide off the paddle of skinner, and sent back down into the dallas zone. Foegele looking for his first goal in 11. Cycled by mcleod back to foegele trying it power his way in front of the net. Back to ceci. And across, darnell nurse can't filter it through. Ends up in the corner. Lundkvist is there, battling for it is holloway. On it is benn. And benn gets hooked by holloway, and for the second time in this first period, dallas is going to go to the power play. >> Craig: well foegele sitting on the bench shaking his head, and you know, part of this, watch how quickly he gets his legs moving and creates some separation. But he knows that pressure's coming, and when he gets in tight just a few too many quick hand moves. When you're not a player who's used to scoring at this level, one move too many, you can see the puck just bobble off his stick and in the corner on the battle, just that little tug underneath the stick as holloway trying to get away from esa lindell and get to benn and instead it's the second power play chance for the dallas stars. >> Chris: stars were 4 for 14 against vegas, 5 for 17 against colorado. And came into this third round at 29%. On the power play. Benn on the draw but the oilers able to win it off the stick of derek ryan, and get an early clear. So 15 straight kills for edmonton as jason robertson backhands it in. 80 points for robertson this year after over 100 the season before. He's led the team in scoring for two consecutive years, and there's the second clear by the oilers on this power play. >> Craig: great communication there by the forwards and defence to say you have time and deliver the puck to be able to clear the zone. >> Chris: final minute here in the opening period, and back is mcleod trying to get past heiskanen. Benn back to heiskanen, and he'll start back for dallas. Changes underway, and stankoven to work. He'll drop for duchene. Over the line, back to logan stankoven. And nearly knocked off the stick of marchment but he's able to maintain possession. Duchene in front, chance, and skinner! Out beyond the blue to make that stop off tyler seguin. >> Craig: what a good job of jumping to the hole there, a nice hard pass by duchene and I think seguin delaying, stuart skinner it to get across fast. He comes out and just sliding as far as he can out. Seguin had to get it up and over. Good job of nurse there, you might get in the eyes of your goaltender but he didn't allow seguin to put the puck where he wented to, and then skinner able to find it on the release. >> Chris: draisaitl wins the draw and has words and maybe took a chop at seguin as he heads back to the bench. Edmonton's won 9 of the first 16 faceoffs in this game. Here's duchene. Late stages opening period. That puck played back to harley and across, one more shot at the horn! And the opening period is done. So one done here. And no scoring so far in the opening game of the western conference final. There'll be 28 seconds remaining in the holloway minor to start period number two. [ ] our first intermission coming up, ron with rick bowness and the guys coming up. Tonight from dallas, game one, the edmonton oilers and the dallas stars and we're pleased to be joined by jack adams nominee rick bowness. Five decades, still got it, rick. Thank you for joining us. >> Rick: still kicking. >> Ron: that's right. You noticed pete deboer and the stars run neat offensive schemes. >> Rick: you hear coaches talk about what's playing fast mean. If you watch dallas, once they pick a side on the breakout, the weak side winger going to blow the zone. Now you see the petrovic, he's going to turn the puck up ice. The left winger isn't coming back into the zone. He has confidence the puck will come north and he's hanging in behind there and I know craig showed it earlier. That's what they're doing, pick a weak side winger is going to blow the zone. Jamie benn already pulled out, trying to pull the winger back and there's thomas harley on the play. They want the net front d to join and the same here again, they're going to pull him out. He pulls bouchard over. He makes a mistake skating into the traffic but they're trying to keep stretching them out and playing the game fast. Pick a side here, it goes over, you watch robertson. He's not thinking about coming back in the zone, there he is. Once their forwards feel their d have control of the puck, they're flying the zone. >> Kevin: with that game plan, there'll never be a reverse. There will be a a d up the strong side behind the net, that would slow the whole thing down. >> Rick: you want to play fast, pick a side and keep the puck moving and everyone has to be on the same page and that's what dallas are doing a great job of so far. >> Kevin: they only created seven shots on net but good chances, and stuart skinner,

what's everyone talking about? Edmonton has a weaker goalie than dallas, that's facts, luke. You're looking at me but oettinger, a lot of confidence from dallas. We didn't know what skinner but getting that save early in the game, I think for sure for a goalie with confidence, with some question marks heading into the series, that's enormous for him. It allows him to be comfortable, and I also think playing your first game in the series on the road also helps. Less pressure than at home but he's seeing the puck really well and you see the focus. He doesn't -- you can tell when a goalie has nerves. He looks comfortable. >> Ron: I thought rick, you made a nice way of framing it, there will never be a conversation in dallas of who'll be in net. There might be, but doesn't look like it. >> Rick: skinner plays like that, let him roll like that. Dallas has so much faith in jake oettinger. A phenomenal job with him since the day he came into the league. If he has a bad game, they have full confidence he will bounce back. Jake is a competitive guy, great character, and they have all the faith in the world in him. >> Ron: about the 1-2-2? >> Rick: talk about playing fast, edmonton is trying to get in behind. Dallas is trying to cut the ice in half with the 1-2-2. The edmonton forwards, all three are in behind. The problem is it becomes a one-on-one, there's no next play. He needs support over there but edmonton trying to play fast, trying to get in behind nose layers of forwards, and again get the puck moving but what's happened, you gotta have the next play. Mcdavid kind of got stuck on the one-on-one. He tried to work it two-on-one over there when you can. >> Luke: we talked about the blocks too. Once edmonton's getting into the offensive zone, dallas is blocking everything. Their team leads the playoffs in blocks, the two pairs of all four on the top ten are blocked shots and you're seeing it already. As soon as it's low to high for edmonton, dallas is collapsing in and they're so good at getting in the lane. Pavelski sticks his foot out, this is johnston through the middle of the ice and gets a stick on it for dallas. Another d to d and guys are the in lane. That's duchene again. Rick, how do you coach d to get more shots through? >> Rick: they have to be moving as much as they can. Again, the defenceman's responsibility on the blue line, you have to get it by that first guy and they're doing a good job. But dallas, again you can't always control what's going on down by their net. Dallas is going to good job kilometressingcollapsing. The defenceman's job, get it by the first guy to the net, and dallas is reading that and picking off the passers. >> Rick:PASSERS.>> Kevin: you told us bones playing chicago, all these guys eating pucks, you would tell us take slapshots, a slapshot from the blue line. >> Rick: make it hurt. They want to stop, make it hurt. >> Kevin: especially with my bomb. >> Rick: bomb is a bit of an exaggeration, it was all right. >> Ron: the hit on bouchard, a big moment in the first period, that and the kane penalty. Anyway, gene and get insight from elliotte friedman and gene principe. >> Thanks very much. >> Gene: have you seen something different about pete deboer and his forwards? >> Elliotte: chris cuthbert alluded to it, pete deboer changed the top three forward lines all on the left side. Game six against dallas, robertson with -- marchment with the seguin dadonov duo, and benn with johnston and stankoven. They have made the changed and moved the three around. Now pavelski's pavelski's line got the first shift against mcdavid but generally it's robertson, johnston, stankoven that he's comfortable with against draisaitl or mcdavid's line. There was one time after one of the first dallas power play that kris knoblauch got, mcdavid and draisaitl out against the forty fourth line but he looks comfortable with robertson and johnston and stankoven are together, at least early. >> Gene: what do you want to say about thomas harley? >> Elliotte: pete deboer was asked who are some of the players impressed him he didn't know since he got here, he mentioned thomas harley is a player he didn't know a lot about, and a long way to go but come a long way and become a big player. >> Gene: and the veteran who surprised him was matt duchene. And by the way, elliotte asked the question, he didn't want to say it. >> Ron: we'll have him replaced gene, don't worry about it. Skinner, great first period, seven saves. And leon draisaitl, the conversation with dylan holloway, good leadership, good game. 0-0 after 20 minutes on NHLShop.ca, the official online store of the nhl and Canada's largest selection of authentic nhl fan gear.
