[ ] >> Natasha: there is a new call for facebook to do more to crack crackdown on scammers. It comes from a new brunswick woman who is going public after her account was hacked and hijacked and then her friends were targeted. If you use social media, really, who doesn't, you should be vigilance because the scam is still making the rounds online. >> We have stayed in touch through facebook and messenger over the years. >> Reporter: these former neighbours were reunited after being sucked into a facebook scam that is designed to play on the goodwill of friends. Here is what happened. If rob stir pat pat -- hacked her account. Pretending to be here, they posted an ad. Of several friends sent senti transfer deposits, losing thousands of dollars, including carol stevens. >> I thought it was my friend lisa and she is the most honest, trustworthy person I know. >> Reporter: lisa and her friends repeatedly reported the crime in progress to facebook at the company nothing to stop it. >> They had a lot of people saying, this is a scam and they didn't do anything about it. >> Reporter: last year, canadians lost a reported $174 million in social media scams. According to the canadian antifraud centre and there is more.." public found page after page of the same scam running rampant on facebook. Same words, same photos. We asked the company behind facebook why it is failing to remove a scam that they already know about. They didn't respond. >> As a result, what starts as a small issue is exacerbated into a massive identity daft or identity fraud. >> Reporter: mehta made about 185 lien dollars in revenue last year. The cybercrime experts say it is time to invest more in protecting users. >> The organizations need to respond to people's actual needs. >> Reporter: posing as a customer, go public contacted several of the scammers. >> 300 upfront which macklin recalled one of them out and asked if facebook had ever shut them down, they didn't seem worried. Mehta says over 15,000 reviewers across the globe review potential violations on facebook and instagram and receive in-depth training. The two women say they lost trust in social media but they are grateful to have someone they can trust back in their lives. >> We will not go so long before our next visit together. Michael j. [ ] >> Natasha: new brunswick's premier blaine higgs says he will be banning and school presentations from one particular sex education group from québec. He says a group misrepresented the content it would be sharing with students and went beyond the provincial curriculum in the materials it is using. Brett ruskin reports. >> Reporter: this all began as a result of a post on x., formerly twitter from the premier's personal account. The premier of new brunswick posted that he is furious with what he saw with just one someone sent him a picture, a snap of your presentation it was happening in a new brunswick school. On this one slide there were questions, things like do girls masturbate, as a going to hurt when I do it for the first time, questions that my typically come up during a sex ed class or a sex ed workshop. There would be questions like this. However, when the presentation was being done is being done by a group called hpv global action where there to talk about sexually transmitted infections. The premier says the topic on the slide being discussed in the presentation went far beyond the scope of what this group was there to present about. The premier says that they have revoked their opportunity to present in front of schools to share information about hpv, about sti. A sexual education and generally to students. And at the province is reviewing its policies around third-party presentations like this and new brunswick schools. At the end of the note from the premier, there is a link to the P.C. party website where people can answer how concerns they are about this issue, about this topic and also signed up to volunteer for the party if they so choose. Perhaps some public feedback being collected as to how much new brunswick curs care about this issue. As for the cherry, they are left scratching their heads. They say they have been doing presentations like this for years in schools and they have been presenting recently efron for a different new brunswick schools and all of the material and content that they present falls within the new brunswick curriculum and that that specific material is approved in advance by the schools themselves. So they are left with no longer the opportunity to share their messaging and the work that they were doing. Colleagues have asked the premier's office for more details about this decision and what it might mean going forward. We are yet to receive a response from them.
