[ ] >> Jacqueline: in addition to the five days of national mourning, the government has also suspended cultural and artistic activities for seven days. Sporting events and weddings will also be postponed until after that period. Reporter rebecca collard has the latest. >> Reporter: tens of thousands of iranians were in the streets today mourning the death of the country's president ebrahim raisi and other companions who died in the helicopter crash on sunday. Now today, the funeral procession went through the centre of tehran, and they were joined by dignitiaries from other countries. If you look at the people who attended today's ceremony, you can get an idea of both of the policy environment that ebrahim raisi had been operating in and also his agenda. On top of the leaders of these various states, there were leaders of hamas. Notably missing were dignitiaries from western states, the u.s., the u.k., and canada canada. Raisi has been in power since 2021. Elections are going to be held at the end of june. Those who want to run in these elections can submit their applications to the guardian committee. They decide who's able to run in these presidential elections which gives an idea of the sort of democracy that people will be participating in. Offer in environments like this where democracy may not be transparent and democracy may not be strong, authoritarian re regimes are looking for high turnout. I will say, you know, that the last couple of elections or inside iran have seen very low voter turnout, the parliamentary elections as low

I'm jacqueline hansen. >> Andrew: and I'm andrew nichols. >> Jacqueline: this is cbc news network. Three people are dead after a brawl in montreal last night. We'll bring you updates on the situation. >> Andrew: and weather updates in ontario and quebec warning of conditions that could produce large hail. >> Jacqueline: but we begin in montreal where a deadly brawl resulted in the deaths of three people, including a 15-year-old. It's one of several events that have plagued the city in recent weeks. CBCs jennifer yoon has the details. >> Reporter: police found three people dead, and I want to zoom out and show you the scene. It's a residential neighborhood that's quite busy with people going to the nearby park. I've spoken to some of the people in a nearby building, that red brick building, who told us what they witnessed. They were going about their day, heard noises. They went down on the balcony and saw young people in the parking lot, young people on the ground. In fact, you can still see some of the blood stains on the ground. Police have not made any arrests yet. They know that there were 15, 16 people present. They say that some of the suspects are not being cooperative which makes the process a little bit longer, about you they think that this is a personal conflict that escalated and that the suspects and victims knew each other. >> Jacqueline: jennifer, this is the latest in a string of deadly homicides lately in montreal. What can you tell us? >> Reporter: police are trying to reassure the public that montreal is still a safe city, and I want you to listen to what they had to say earlier today. >> Montreal is pretty safe. When you compare it to other people in canada and the united states, we're pretty safe. We're 2 million people and we have 25, 35 murders. That's too much, but when you compare it to other cities, it's pretty safe. >> Reporter: and police say it's not a gang war, it's not a turf war, it's a chance event, but they don't know if that will make it easier or harder for investigators to get to the bottom of what happened here. >> Jacqueline: jennifer, thank you. The CBCs jennifer yoon in montreal. >> Andrew: and the family members of three hostages in israel have released graphic video content of the october 7 attack by hamas. A warning, you may find the video disturbing. >> Andrew: body cameras worn by hamas militants captured the scene. The families hope it puts pressure on prime minister benjamin netanyahu to focus on releasing the hostages from gaza. Journalist irris mackler has more. >> Reporter: we see young women, their hands tied behind their backs. Some of them are bleeding. Many of them are barefoot and wearing, you know, their pajamas basically because they've come early in the morning. We also know that they're in a bomb shelter, and that the bomb shelter was overrun by hamas attackers on that morning. So they're shouting, they're shouting in airrabic. They're then moved from there into vehicles that will take them to the gaza strip where they'll be held hostage. We know that they walked among the bodies of their friends that were killed. One of the girls who's barefoot is hopping.

she's been injured. You hear shouting, you hear shooting, and it's clear that the young women are terrified. As a woman watching it myself, the two most distressing things for me were actually comments by the attackers. One them says to one of the girls, you're beautiful, and then he says to one of his friends these are the women that we can get pregnant, so you know what they're terrified of. You know what you would be terrified of, and this is the censored version where you don't say too much. Those five girls have been there for 229 days, and the families don't feel that the israeli government has done enough. It's an indictment of the failure first of all on the 7th of october and then before the 7th of october. It's known that the government or the war cabinet hasn't met to discuss the hostage situation for days now. I heard from the parents who said it was very difficult to make this decision. You know what they're fearing and there's a basis for them to fear it without hearing what those attackers said from the experience of other hostages. They think it's urgent to get these hostages out and they feel that the government is not doing enough and that's why they released it, as they say. >> Andrew: journalist irris mackler in jerusalem. >>> Ireland, spain, and norway say they plan to recognise a palestinian state as early as tuesday, and ireland's representative say they expect other countries to support. >> The only credible path to peace and security for israel, for palestine, and for their peoples. >> Andrew: israel has ordered the immediate recall of its ambassadors to ireland, spain, and norway. The white house was also quick to react. A spokesperson said while the president supports a two-state solution, it should be achieved through negotiation and not in a declaration.

>>> Jake sullivan seemed skeptical. >> I have not heard the logic for now it contributes. What I can tell you is we believe the only way you're going to achieve a two-state solution that delivers for israelis and palestinians is for direct negotiations between the parties. That's what we've been reaching for, that's what we're been striving for, and that's why it's been such a focus of president biden from the beginning, not just post october 7. But you'd have to ask them how they connect the unilateral motion to a peace agreement or a ceasefire because I'm not sure how that works out. >> Andrew: israel's military has granted permission for jewish settlers to return to three former west bank settlements. They were shutdown in 2005 as part of a so-called engagement plan that resulted in israelis withdrawing from gaza. Israel has faced significant international pressure to curb settlement expansion in the west bank. The settlements are considered illegal by palestinians and international law. >>> Israeli forces have killed ten palestinians in the west bank city of jenin according to the palestinian health ministry. Palestinian officials say a doctor on his way to work and a teacher are among the dead. It also says 25 palestinians have been wounded there since tuesday. Israel's military says it's targeting armed militants in the city.

>>> The ucla police chief has withdrawn over his handling of hamas pro-palestinian encampments. On may 5, ucla created a new chief safety officer position to oversee campus security. Police dismantled a pro-palestinian encampment at ucla earlier this month, arresting 200 people. >> Jacqueline: N.D.P. leader jagmeet singh is calling for an investigation between loblaw and a telecommunications retailer. It would see mobile companies such as telus and freedom mobile >> Is that everything you needed to do, or everything you wereableto do? >> You cannot walk away from this money. >> A quick explanation. >> Announcer: Join David Cochrane forPower & Politics, today at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. We're all bravely facing the odds in our lives. CBCs olivia stefanovich has more on what N.D.P. leader jagmeet singh is asking for. >> Reporter: N.D.P. leader jagmeet singh has sent this letter to the competition bureau of canada asking for an investigation. It all stems from a cbc news report that was broke by our colleague, CBCs kate McKENNA, about an issue to do with the media and telefirm quebecor. It wrote to minister francois-phillipe champagne asking the government to intervene in an issue it calls an anticompetitive move by loblaw. The C.E.O. of quebecor says it's ending a contract with quebecor and starting a contract with rogers and bell, the two biggest telecom companies in canada. The quebecor C.E.O. says under its contract with loblaw, it's able to offer cell phone services to canadians in about 170 stores, but not just quebecor but other companies. In this new deal that loblaw is entering into with glentel, that only glentel phones and plans would be offered, so this would create less competition and this is something that the C.E.O. is concerned and now that N.D.P. leader jagmeet singh is taking up the cause. Take a listen. >> The liberals and justin trudeau act like they have no power to stop this. They absolutely do have the power and the responsibility to stop companies from ripping off canadians. We're calling on the competition bureau to investigate this, to eliminate this. >> Reporter: so in singh's letter to the competition commissioner which was sent
