plan of six items. They've been criticized of being short on detail, so they've got six weeks to convince the public that change is needed and that they should not be voting for the conservative party once again and put their trust in labour. >> Andrew: the N.D.P. is calling for an investigation into what it's called an anticompetitive deal put forward by loblaw and between rogers and bell. The CBCs olivia stefanovich joins us now with more. What is it that the N.D.P. leader is asking for? >> Reporter: the N.D.P. leader jagmeet singh sent this letter asking for an investigation over a story broke by a cbc colleague, kate McKENNA. It's over an anticompetitive move by loblaw. It's ending a contract that it has with quebecoire and concerns a company, glentel, a company owned by bell and rogers. Under this new deal that the C.E.O. says that loblaw is turning to with glentel which is, of course, again, owned by rogers and bell, that only rogers and bell cell phones and plans would be offered so this would create less competition and this is something that the C.E.O. is concerned and now N.D.P. leader jagmeet singh is taking up as a cause. Take a listen. >> When these anticompetitive contracts happen, they need to be investigated and stopped in their track. The liberals and justin trudeau act like they don't have the power. They do. They have the power to stop the ripping off of canadians, so we're calling on the bureau to investigate this. >> Andrew: how is the government responding to this? >> Reporter: well, industry minister minister francois-phillipe champagne and the prime minister addressed this today, saying that the minister will look at the competition act and that the responsibility lies with the competition bureau. Singh brought this up again in question period asking the prime minister. Let's take a listen. >> The prime minister promised to lower cell phone fees. They're sky high. He promised to lower grocery prices. They're sky high. When will the prime minister stop greedy C.E.O.s from ripping off canadians. >> Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: mr. Speaker, we've seen cell phone bills decrease for canadians by 20% over the last few years. I know that the minister is looking into the competition act to see if it needs to be referred on a number of things that have come forward, but we are going to continue to standup for the middle class. >> Reporter: that led to a lot of heckling from the conservative benches. Conservative leader pierre poilievre rose to comment on the confidence-and-supply agreement, which highlights the challenges that the N.D.P. face when they raise issues, however, it's worth noting that it's unclear how ending the supply-and-confidence agreement could lead to cheaper cell phone bills or cell phones for canadians. >> Andrew: olivia, thank you. That is the CBCs olivia stefanovich in ottawa.

It has agreed to create a permanent memorial and pay the families $2 million. The families wanted to avoid a long trial which likely would have bankrupted the city. At the same time, the families have filed a new lawsuit against the texas department of public safety. On the day of the shooting, federal, local, and state law enforcement waited 45 minutes to confront the gunman, and the delay, the families say, likely cost lives. >> Andrew: that is storm chasing video from deadly tornados that swept over iowa. The CBCs richard madan has the latest. >> Reporter: well, the extreme damage from that deadly tornado has made the small town of greenfield, iowa, almost unrecognisable. People in that tight-knit community are dealing with the aftermath, and iowa governor kim reynolds toured the situation. >> It is just horrific. It's hard to describe until you can actually see it, the devastation. It's -- but at the same time, I can't begin to tell you just how heartwarming it is to see everybody out there helping each other. >> Reporter: this drone video shows the after math in greenfield. You can see the tornado's path of destruction, up-ending cars, flattening homes, and ripping up trees. Recovery efforts are still underway. >> It's still search and rescue, so we're going to continue to do everything we can to monitor the area. Do you have any -- >> We're still in a hold coordinated search. That's the whole methodology with who is allowed in at this time. It's still a search mission as far as we're looking to make sure that all residents are accounted for when we have this many home that's have been destroyed and -- homes that have been destroyed and make sure that everyone is accounted for. >> Reporter: the tornado also knocked down the town's main hospital, forcing paramedics to take victims to other treatment

That point has now arrived. >> Andrew: the governments of ireland, spain, and norway have announced that they are recognizing the state of palestine. The country's leaders made simultaneous announcements today. It takes effect next week, on may 28. Israel has condemned the move and has recalled its ambassadors from all three countries. The push for the recognition of a palestinian state has incidence increased since the war in gaza but canada is one of a number of countries that doesn't recognise a palestine state. >> >> Reporter: they said these charges that have been dropped never should have been charged in the first place. When the event happened, there was a poster of the chairman of the book store with the text under it, "funding hate." these arrests and the vandalism caused a lot of reaction here in toronto. Some jewish advocacy groups called it an antisemitic attack. They say heather reeseman was being attacked because she is jewish, but we heard some speakers saying that vandalism was not targeting heather reeseman because she's jewish but because she supports a business with ties to the israeli military. The charity that she funds and supports financially provides scholarships to some israeli soldiers who want to stay in israel and study after their service. Now these speakers saying that these charges were bogus and baseless and absurd. They were also critical of the toronto police, how they carried out the search warrants. In some cases, they say there were children frightened by the police activity. We heard from one of the men who was arrested and charged who had his charges dropped. Here's what he said. >> I stand here as someone undeterred even though these were bogus charges. I want to make something clear, we will not stop until the charges are dropped. >> Reporter: now he said that his charges were dropped because the crown wasn't convinced of a reasonable result of conviction. He and others at a news conference saying all the charges against all 11 people should be dropped. We heard from one of the lawyers of a woman who also had her charges dropped, and he said it would not be in the public interest to proceed with those other charges, the outstanding ones that the crown is still pursuing, and according to this lawyer, he thinks it would be a waste of time to move ahead on those charges. >> Jacqueline: what is the crown saying on it? >> Reporter: we've got a statement provided through the toronto police. They say this was a complex

investigation involving 11 people accused, 30 charges laid. It was complex to gather cell phone extraction and data, and it took them a lot of time to analyse the evidence and give careful consideration whether there would be a reasonable likelihood of conviction. They said dropping the charges against four of the individuals shouldn't be taken as a criticism of these police arresting them in the first place, and the charges being laid. They say they're committed to ensuring the allegations receive the resources and attention they deserve. The decision to proceed in this manner will permit a focused and efficient prosecution on the cases with the strongest evidence. We also have a statement from the toronto police. They said something similar that dropping charges against four people shouldn't be considered a criticism of the charges being laid in the first place, and also, jacqueline, we reached out to indigo for comment. We haven't heard back yet. >> Jacqueline: the CBCs meagan fitzpatrick in toronto. >> Andrew: organizers of the hot talk festival says they will close the ted rogers arena amid layoffs. A court has blocked the foreclosure sale of graceland. The CBCs jeannie lee has more. Come on, jeannie. Could this iconic property really be auctioned off? >> Reporter: I think that suspicious minds will prevail. You think of the massive amount

of money that elvis presley made in his lifetime and beyond. It's a story of how much money was made and lost and made and lost again. The effort to save the great piece of the elvis presley empire, a look alike, his granddaughter, is alleging there is a scheme afoot to steal graceland. This is the modestly built home that elvis purchased with a $1,000 down payment in 1957 and where he died 20 years later. It's quite a mecca for elvis fans. They've been flocking to see this home, graceland, for so many years since his death. It still generates $12 million a year for riley keough, elvis' granddaughter. Nahaunny investments, which has no website and no phone number that anyone can find, claimed it loaned a little over $3 million to lisa marie presley, the daughter of elvis, and she had put graceland up for collateral. Since she died last year and has not paid this money back, this company filed a document in court and in fact had an auction scheduled for tomorrow to sell off the house to the highest bidder and recoup its losses, but the court decided to hold a hearing in which riley keough can go up against this company if it exists to see if this claim is real and prove she is the rightful owner of graceland. >> Andrew: you think the estate would be flush with cash. What are the details? >> Reporter: it's incredible. Elvis is believed to have made $1 billion in his lifetime from royalties and earnings. Even if if elvis were alive and never made another penny, it would put him among people like steven spielberg. But his only child was born into immense wealth and she also spent apparently a lot of money. Elvis actually died in debt, but his ex-wife, priscilla, grew the assets, including graceland, to over $1 billion, but nine years ago, she paid off off -- sold off 85% of elvis presley enterprises to pay her debt. It's a story of who you hire to manage your money, overspending, both of which elvis suffered from, and when people can take notice that you might be exposed and vulnerable to this kind of claim, but all of this has to be proven in court. >> Andrew: okay. And how are things looking on the financial markets this hour? >> Reporter: well, this is a day that started off very, very quiet, and now, we're seeing a sell off possibly from what we could see later today, and that's the action that could be taken by nvidia. The T.S.X. composite down 143 points. The dow has been flipping day by day. The nasdaq, a little caution, down 59 points, and oil and gold are suddenly trading a little lower today.
