>> Andrew Chang: May is Asian Heritage Month. Join us in celebrating the many contributions that Asian Canadians make to Canada. >>. >> Andrew: we'll have the latest. >> Jacqueline: and the families of several women held hostage by hamas have released video of them in captivity. We'll have reaction and what pressure this may put on the israeli government. >> Andrew: but we begin in montreal, where a deadly brawl last night resulted in the deaths of three people, including a 15-year-old. It's one of many fatal events that have plagued the city in recent weeks. The CBCs jennifer yoon is in the area and has more. >> Reporter: I'm in the area where the incident happened. I just want to pan out and show you the scene. It's a neighborhood that's busy, with people going to the nearby park. I've spoken with people in a nearby building, in this red brick building. They said they were going about their business, and they heard noises. They saw young people on the ground, and you can see what appears to be blood stains on the ground there. There were about 15 or 16 people present and they're still identifying who those people are. They're saying that some of the suspects aren't being cooperative, but also they think this is a person conflict. >> Jacqueline: jennifer, what else can you tell us about this homicide? >> Reporter: this is the latest homicide in montreal this year, and police are still trying to assure people that montreal is a safe city. Take a listen. >> We arecompared to other cities, montreal is pretty safe. When you compare with other cities, it's pretty safe. >> Reporter: and also, police say they don't think this is gang related, it's not a turf war, this is a chance event, but it's not making it any easier for investigators to go to the -- to get to the bottom of this. >> Andrew: the CBCs jennifer yoon in montreal. >> Jacqueline: and a video has been released by hamas to show some of the events that happened on october 7. We're going to show you some of it right now, and a warning, you may find the video disturbing. [speaking foreign language] >> Jacqueline: the families of the young women hope the video puts pressure on prime minister benjamin netanyahu to secure their release from gaza. Journalist irris mackler spoke about the video earlier. >> Reporter: we see scenes of chaos, young women with their hands tied behind their backs. Many of them are wearing their pajamas because they came early in the morning. We also know that they're in a bomb shelter, and the bomb shelter was overrun by hamas attackers on that morning. So they're shouting, they're shouting in arabic. They're then moved there to vehicles that will take them into the gaza strip where they'll be taken hostage. We know in that room there were bodies of their friends who were killed, so they were

sitting there amongst the bodies of their friends. One of the girls was hopping because she's injured. You can hear shouting, it's kai on -- it's chaotic, it's terrifying. As a woman watching it myself, one of the most disturbing things for me was commented made by the attackers. He said to one of the young girls, you're beautiful, and then he says to another attacker, these are the girls we can get pregnant. You know what they're thinking, and you know this is the video where they don't show too much. >> Andrew: and irris, why did they decide to release this video? >> Reporter: well, those five girls have been there for 229 days, and the families of the hostages do not feel that enough is being done. There hasn't been a hostage negotiation for more than two weeks. Even more than that, it's known that the government or the war cabinet hasn't met to discuss the hostage situation for days now, and I think that's why they made the decision. I heard the parents talking about it. It was very difficult for them to make this decision, it was very difficult for them to release this because other released female hostages described sexual assault. You know there's a basis of fearing it without hearing the version of other hostages. They feel they need to get these hostages out and they don't feel that the government is doing enough, and that's what they say. >> Jacqueline: that's journalist irris mackler.

>>> Well, ireland, norway, and spain say they are issuing a statement to recognise a palestinian state, and that could happen as early as monday. Meanwhile, israel has ordered the immediate recall of its ambassadors to ireland, spain, and norway. The white house was also quick to react. A spokesperson said while the president supports a two-state solution, he believes it should be achieved through negotiation and not uni lateral declarations. >>> Norway's recognition of a palestinian state is especially significant. It was instrumental in the negotiation of the oslo accords in 1993 which created the palestinian authority. Norway's minister of foreign affairs spoke with cbc news today and says it's taken years to lay the path for this recognition. >> Norway and spain and the others have been working for the case towards a two-state solution and a palestine, but we used to think that formal bilateral recognition would happen at the end. We have changed that and we feel that we need to strengthen the moderate authorities in the area. Many people see the violence and said that they would now follow people back. These are the people that we support that support a two-state solution. We think it's time to play that card now. I would like to say that since I have this opportunity that I have recognised a significant aspect of canadian politics, as well. They used to vote against, and now they abstain from the vote of palestinian leadership. This is difficult for all of us and there are dilemmas involved for every country, but neither the one-state solution of hamas, obviously, or the one-state solution of the extreme right in israel is the right solution. We need a two-state solution, and in order for the palestinians to thrive, we need the inherent right of the palestinians to govern themselves. Otherwise we're just sinking further into the quagmire to the extreme elements that will be in charge of this [indiscernible]. >> Jacqueline: the white house national security advisor was asked again about the decisions of ireland, norway, and spain, claiming their declarations contribute to the peace process. Jake sullivan appeared skeptical. >> The only way you're going to achieve peace between the parties is anegotiations. We're trying to generation momentum in that direction. That's why it's been such a focus of president biden from the beginning, not just october 7, but you have to ask them how they connect uni lateral participation in a ceasefire or a single state solution because I don't know. >> Jacqueline: israel's military has granted permission for jewish settlers to return to three former west bank settlements. They were shutdown in 2005 as part of a so-called disengagement plan. The settlements are located around two palestinian cities. Israel has faced significant international pressure to curb settlement expansion in the west bank but have moved in the opposite direction in recent years. The settlements are considered illegal by palestinians and under international law. Palestinians see the land alongside gaza as part of a future independent state.

>>> Israeli forces have killed ten palestinians in the west bank city of jenin according to the palestinian health ministry. A doctor on his way to work and a teacher are among the dead. It also says 25 palestinians are among the dead since tuesday. Israel says it's targeting hamas militants. >>> And the city of los angeles has reassigned its police chief after his handling of pro-palestinian protesters. On may 5, ucla created a new chief safety officer position to oversee campus security. Police dismantled the pro-palestinian encampment as ucla earlier this -- at ucla earlier this month, arresting about 200 people. >> Andrew: the U.K. is heading to the polls this summer. Prime minister rishi sunak made the announcement earlier this afternoon. >> Earlier this afternoon, I spoke with the king to request a dissolution of parliament. His majesty granted that request, and we will have an election on 4 july. This comes amid a time of world instability not seen since the end of the cold war. In the middle east, the forces of islam extremist threaten global stability that seeks to undermine our values at home. China is looking to dominate global technology. >> Andrew: the CBCs julia chapman is on the story in the british capital. It's expected to be an intense campaign with many voters looking for a change. >> Reporter: the conservative party is trailing the labour party by 20 points in most polls, but rishi sunak has decided this is the moment to declare an election in six weeks' time. He is looking at economic data on the up, he is pointing to his success in getting through a policy to deport migrants coming to this country unofficially to rwanda, and he's hoping that those political victories, as he sees them, will be enough to convince the british public to give the conservative party another chance. The party has been in power 14 years, and he is the fifth conservative prime minister in the country in that time. The country seems hungry for a change. The polls suggest that the labour party will win unless there is a major sea change. Keir keir starmer said this is a change that the labour party has been looking for. The labour party has been looking for this to happen as early as possible, and he put himself as a candidate to put britain on a different path. >> We have a plan to rebuild britain, a plan that is ready to go, fully costed and fully funded, but most importantly, we do all this with a new spirit of service. Country first, party second. A rejection of the gesture politics you will see in this campaign, I have no doubt, from the tories and the S.M.P. >> Andrew: and so julia, what are the main issues of voters? >> Reporter: sunak is hoping that economic policy and inflation will work in his favour. Migration is an issue that may not swing many voters on either side, but health care is a major concern for many people. Waiting times have gone up in this country. There are scenes of people waiting in this country for many, many hours to be treated, so certainly that is another topic that people will be voting on. When it comes to policies, the labour party has put forward a
