rupindiman singh malik's son, hardeep, apparently, under threat of assassination. Those of course look even more suspicious. Investigators, although they're looking at this case closely, have not yet been able to develop as much evidence or as strong a connection to the government of india as they believe they developed in the nijjar case. This case remains open and neither of those officials I mentioned has been charged or accused of anything by canadian authorities. >> Travis: more developments in the days to come. Cbc's evan dyer with the exclusive reporting tonight in our ottawa bureau. Thanks. >>> Three people have been killed after a brawl in an apartment building in montréal. Jean says he remembers the words he said to his 25-year-old son, henrique, hours before he was killed. The other victims are 23-year-old alexander and a 15-year-old who cbc has chosen not to identify due to their age. This person says she's mourning her schoolmate and friend. Police were called around 7 p.m. Tuesday to the brawl involving about 15 people. Witnesses describe a harrowing scene. >> Bodies of -- lying on the ground next to this car and blood coming out of one's head profusely. All this place was bloody. >> Reporter: police say the fight was not gang-related but was a personal conflict. Those involved fled before police arrived. It says investigators are still piecing together what happened. >> We're still looking videos, interrogate some people, and doing the neighbourhood to check out if it has some video, some information about it. >> Reporter: police say they have a few suspects at this point but so far no arrests have been made. Sharon yonan-renold, cbc news, montréal. >> Travis: here's what else we have ahead on "canada tonight". >>> The families of five female israeli soldiers released a video today of their abduction by hamas on october 7. The video is just over 3 minutes long and has been edited to remost of the most graphic content. We are going to show you some of it. A warning: you may finds the video disturbing. Body cameras worn by hamas militants capture the video. Families of the young women hope the video puts pressure on israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu to secure their release from gaza. Journalist sarah coates reports from tel aviv. >> Reporter: this footage has been released at the request of the family members of these young women in the video taken october 7th, the day that hamas fighters stormed southern israel, a day commonly known as black saturday. One of the fighters could be heard saying you are so beautiful. Another says here are the girls who can get pregnant. They've clearly been beaten. They are terrified. And they were taken to gaza where they remain. Their families are desperate to get them back. >> We know that there is sexual harassment and sexual abuse there. Yes, it's something that -- it's something that I'm trying not to think about it, but it's something real that can really can happen. >> Reporter: war cabinet minister benny ganz says his stomach churned when watching this clip. He posted on x the responsibility of leaders is not just to look the reality in the eye. It is to create a different reality. Even when it means making it difficult decisions. And that is our responsibility. This comes as protests over the release of hostages are gripping the country as people demand the israeli premier benjamin netanyahu step down over his inaction and what is perceived as his inability to get these remaining israeli captives back. Sarah coates reporting for cbc news. >> Travis: ireland, spain, and norway say they plan to formally recognize a palestinian state as of tuesday and ireland's prime minister said he expects more countries to follow. >> It is a statement of unequivocal support for a two-state solution. The only credible path to peace and security for israel, for palestine, and for their peoples. >> Travis: israel ordered the immediate recall of its ambassadors to ireland, spain, and norway. The white house was also quick to react. A spokes cern person said while the president sports a two-state solution he believes it should be achieved through negotiation and not unilateral declarations.

month's ransomware attack. The company maintains it won't pay the sum being demanded by cybercriminals. In a statement the company says the corporate files including some data may be leaked on the dark web but they don't believe customer or patient data was compromised. London drugs chief operating officer previously told cbc news he believed it was criminal international criminals that were behind the attack. Joining us now is bob seaman, managing partner of cyber firm. London drugs say they're not going to pay this ransom. Is that something you would have advised them to do? >> Companies should not pay ransom, generally. The more companies that pay ransoms the more it encourages these sorts of cyber attacks and ransomware attacks. Companies should not pay them. Industries should agree their millimetres should not pay them and government should ban the payment of ransomware attacks to certain discretionary exceptions. >> Travis: do we have any idea why london drugs would be targeted by cybercriminals? >> 'cause they've got deep pockets and perhaps they have cyber insurance which would pay for the ransom. >> Travis: the hackers were threatening to leak stolen files from its corporate head office colleague employee information if they did not pay. What can happen if this information does get out there on the dark web? >> It's a tremendous risk for identity theft for the employees of the company. People can steal their identity and take out hundreds of thousands of dollars of loans in the individual's names unbeknownst to the individual and they could ruin their credit record for a very long time. >> Travis: london drugs says customer information was not affected but do you believe it's possible customers were compromised as well? >> Anything is possible. There's no evidence to that effect right now. This is why companies have to focus on having the very best cybersecurity professionals working for them. The senior executives need to understand what cyber executives do. Board of directors, senior nontechnical people, and a big part of the problem here is adequate budgets are not given to cybersecurity even though it's existential threat for many companies because the senior executives don't understand what the cybersecurity professionals do and that's why [indiscernible] intended for cybersecurity leaders were nontechnical or executives nontechnical board members to understand what those cybersecurity professionals do and therefore they can evaluate proper budget to protect [indiscernible] >> Travis: do you think this incident should serve as a wake-up call to other companies that may not have robust cybersecurity divisions that are protecting their systems? >> Absolutely. Every company needs to understand that there are attackers all the time, north korea, china, they're attacking. Iran, russia. It's not just cybercriminals. It's hackers, governments have been compromised here in canada. We need to understand that this is a national threat. Governments should do something about it. The oxygen for these ransomware attacks is bitcoin. If ransomware attacks took off after cryptocurrencies became available to millions of dollars could be paid anonymously using the cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin and cryptocurrency is the oxygen for ransomware attacks. You shut off the oxygen almost all financially [indiscernible] ransomware attacks should stop. Governments should crack down on cryptocurrencies by enforcing their existing anti-money laundering laws and existing gambling laws. >> Travis: you said you think it is wise not to pay this ransom. What should the company do now to deal with this problem? >> They shouldn't pay. They should make sure that all their cyberdefences are up now and then they won't be ransomed for a third time because this seems, from the reported evidence, that they were attacked and their systems went down, they had to shut the stores for a week, but now this is a second ransomware attack where the -- during that initial attack information was stolen. Now they're threatening to dispose. But if they pay that shows

they're a mark and may be subject to a third ransomware attack because perhaps in that first attack they put in a secret back door so they could attack them again and steal more information. >> Travis: how difficult is it to track down these cybercriminals? >> Unfortunately it's extremely hard to track them down. The only -- best tracing mechanism is through the cryptocurrency payment mechanism. Unfortunately the criminals know how to hide the ledger transactions and wash the cryptocurrency and that's why cryptocurrency ought to be existing money laundering laws and gambling laws ought to shut it down. The only use case for bitcoin is for criminals and terrorists. >> Travis: bob seeman, appreciate your insight. Bob is managing partner of cyber curb joining us from new york. >>> Telecommunications provider quebecor is accusing retail conglomerate loblaw of anticompetitive behaviour and asking ottawa to intervene. They sent a letter to françois-philippe champagne earlier this month. In it he says loblaw decided to prematurely end its company's contract to sell wireless devices and services at kiosks inside loblaw-owned grocery stores. He claims those kiosks will soon only sell products owned by bell and rogers. Earlier today ndp leader jagmeet singh called on the competition bureau to investigate the deal. >> When these anticompetitive behaviours happen they need to be investigated immediately and stopped in their tracks. The liberals and justin trudeau act like they have no power to stop this. They absolutely do have the power and the responsibility to stop big corporations from ripping off canadians. That is the role of government. We're calling for an investigation by the competition bureau to look into this, to investigate this. >> Travis: the complaint comes just over a month after loblaw launched its own cellphone plans under the no name brand. It uses bell's mobile network to provide consumers with wireless service.

>>> Parts of ontario and québec are dealing with some unsettled weather today including the risk of severe thunderstorms. Cbc's cbc science and climate specialist darius mahdavi joins us live. I'm interested in this 'cause I'm going to have a barbecue after the show but might not be able to to. Take us through the warnings and watches in place. >> Reporter: looks like the worst of it is behind you for toronto at least. Storms are making their way up out of the northeastern parts of ontario into québec which means most of those warnings dropped in ontario and we're left with watches in case something else does pop up. Little bit of that energy left forming another thunderstorm. Doesn't seem too likely. Ontario now moving into québec and even there shouldn't last more than another 12 hours or so. We're through the worst of it and hopefully not see any more tornado warnings although it is possible in some parts of québec. You'll see storms pass through ontario and up into québec the last few hours. Last six hours or so. Up in northwestern ontario we had a rainfall warning because of heavy rain falling there now that's mostly behind us. May see snowfall there as well. Gale warnings in pink and in yellow thunderstorm warnings. A couple hours ago we were seeing a couple tornado warnings. Those have come down. No reports of tornado forming. When it comes to one of these lower level tornadoes, ef0, less strong one, where winds are 100 to 120 km/hr, so it's not really much more dangerous than a severe thunderstorm. I'm not saying that to say that the tornadoes aren't dangerous. I'm trying to emphasize the fact a severe thunderstorm can be very dangerous so you should take precautions when you get one of these severe thunderstorm warnings which are now in place for parts of québec. Very strong winds up to 90, 100 km/hr, hail the size of toonies is possible. Stay indoors if you can, try and avoid too much travel because winds will be very strong. May see more impacts yet. Fortunately the worst is behind us. If we see another tornado warning, it will be in that part of québec that's currently under a thunderstorm warning. I don't expect to see anything severe. Most of that rain clearing up. Your barbecue might be able to happen. >> Travis: we will cross our fingers and hope so. Cbc science and climate specialist darius mahdavi in vancouver.

>>> To the united states and wicked weather is storming across the U.S. midwest. High winds, heavy rains, and tornadoes left a trail of destruction stretching from oklahoma to minnesota. That revelation is the result of rcmp data sharing with interpol. The international police agency says that number puts canada as one of the top ten sources for stolen vehicles out of 137

The lawsuit comes just days after a security video surfaced of diddy beating his ex-girlfriend cassie ventura in 2016. Combs apologized for the incident and took, quote, full responsibility. >>> In london the door at 10 downing street swung open earlier today, then the british prime minister strode out into heavy rain to announce a summer election. Julia chapman is following this story from our london bureau and sells us why many expect an intense campaign in the days ahead. >> Reporter: around six weeks of campaigning now gets underway as rishi sunak has fired the starting gun for the next uk general election. He's opted for a summer vote. He had months to go before he would have been forced to call an election but he chose to go earlier than necessary hoping to capitalize on positive economic news with the uk economy growing and inflation here falling. He's also pointing voters to what he sees as his successes in bringing down and deterring unofficial migration to this country but he faces an uphill battle with the ruling conservativeconservative party trailing the opposition labour party by at least 20 points in most polls. The labour leader keir starmer welcomed the early election. He's been pushing for it for some time and he said the electorate was ready for change, vowing that the labour party would be the party to bring that change to the country. He has already been setting out his [indiscernible] putting forward the policies he will be going into this campaign with although he will be challenged on the details of that over the next six weeks but he's very much hoping to capitalize on the fatigue after 14 years of a conservative government. Rishi sunak is the fifth leader of the conservative conservative party in that time and it will be an uphill battle for him to win this general election. Voters here in the uk will be looking at the economy, health care, migration, and other issues like policing and education as they decide who to vote for in six weeks' time. Julia chapman, cbc news, london. >> Travis: michigan has confirmed a farm worker has been diagnosed with bird flu. It's the second human case in the united states associated with an outbreak in dairy cows. Health officials say the patient's symptoms are mild and there is no risk to the public. The U.S. agriculture department says the virus has been confirmed in 51 dairy herds in nine states.
