to stream into this area. Again, I know it may not look like much, but trust me, as we get loafer to fwam time, as that game gets underway, this will be a sea of blue and orange and fans will be packed in here like sardines. Now, businesses in the city have also been preparing for the maufs. We went to one pub earlier today and the general manager there was telling us that on game days business shoots up. We're talking 80 to 120% more than normal. And he said because of that, even on game days where, you know, the game is away, they have to bring in extra people. Whether that's extra servers, extra people behind the bar, even extra security to keep up with things. He also wants to make sure it's something special for people that come to watch the game at the pub. >> I look at it as not just a sports event but a show. A piece of entertainment. From our scoring win draws to fwifing away hockey tickets and hockey shirts, to doing trivia games, to having a dj providing music. On saturday we're bringing in a face painter before the game to decorate peopleses' faces ready for the oilers game. Well always want to do something extra special than merely putting game on and turning the sound on. We want to make it an event. >> Reporter: so as you can see, that's just one way that businesses in the city are gearing up. We've heard of lots of other businesses throwing their support behind the oil ers. So whether that's making donuts that is are blue and orange, cupcake that is are blue and orange or just doing other things to make sure that the team knows the city is behind them. >> Travis: I've seen those blue and orange donuts. They look very good. Talk to me a little bit about the feeling among some of the fans that you've been talking to tonight. >> Reporter: oh, boy. Travis, people here are pumped up. They are excited. They can't wait for this game to start. You know, the last time the oilers were in the conference finals was just a couple years ago, but it has been a hong time since oilers were payable to make it to the finals, and that is something that fans here would definitely love to see. You know, just take a look behind me at some of the people who are starting to fill up this plaza here for that watch party. Everyone is in jerseys. We've seen people in blue and orange wiggles, face paints, foam fingers. People are wearing oilers flags as capes. And this city is just excited. You walk around here and, you know, we're in downtown edmonton. Normally people here would be in business attire. This morning when I was coming into work you could see people wearing business suits but then an oilers jersey on toppem business on the bottom, party on top. People want to show their support for this team. Now, when it comes to where this team could go, how far they could make it, you know, we spoke with a sports journalist who said the stars may be faved, but really the oilers have the star power and they could go all the way. >> The oilers are such a strong team. Their victory overnight vancouver was extremely convincing. The oilers power play is the best in the league. The stars have really struggled shorthanded during this series. So if the oilers can score with a man advantage and with their star power, why wouldn't they, they really do have a good chance, I think, to make it to the stanley cup finals. >> Reporter: and that outcome is definitely something that fans here would love to see. As I mentioned, the gates hoped not just along agoem it will be filling up. This will be the place to be tonight if europe watching the game. If you want to be with others watching the game, they're putting it up on several tv's that are here. You can probably hear the dj trying to pump up the energy for the crowd. It going to be an exciting night in edmonton. >> Travis: it certainly will be. I wonder if there will be some extra sick calls in tomorrow. Julia wong in the middle of edmonton in the middle of all the action. Thank you.

The move would add an unknown number of new citizens, and reverse a past decision by the federal conservatives under stephen harper. But though she's of mi'kmaq descent, she's not born here. That has consequence withes for her two boys. >> There's only one passage of the canadian citizenship. So, thereby, my boys could not receive citizenship, albeit they he are status first nations. >> Reporter: that is due to a change in immigration law brought in under former minister stephen harper, meant to crack down on so-called canadians of convenience. Facing pressure after ottawa paid $85 million to extract canadian citizens from lebanon in 2006 during the war between israel and hezbollah. >> This isn't, again, a free for all. His legislation has the ndp's backing. >> I've talked to family members where their children are deemed stateless, lost in the system because of this unjust punitive, unconstitutional law. >> Reporter: but it not clear how the conservatives will react. Beijing has called it a punishment for separatist forces seeking independence in the self governing island. Taiwan is condemning it as a provocation to jeopardize peace and stability in the region. >> Reporter: they're carrying out 48 hour military drills in the taiwan strait in five areas surrounding taiwan. Now, this comes just three days after the swearing in ceremony of taiwan's new president lai. Someone that beijing has long called a pro independence political figure. His speech was deemed by many experts in canada, the U.S. and taiwan as being cautious in regards to the relationship with china. But a beijing was not satisfied and today a spokesperson for the ministry of foreign affairs in beijing said that these military drills were a stern warning for all the pro independent voices in taiwan and also a punishment. Here in taiwan it's being called provocation, and the new president said he wouldn't hesitate to join his troops on the frontline if need be to defend freedom and democracy. As for the u.s., a deputy commander for the U.S. forces in the indo pacific region said there would be deep consequences if there was to be nip sort of military confrontation in the region. >> I can't underscore enough how devastating conflict in the indo pacific region would be. At stake would be untold numbers of lives, trillions in global economic damage, and an international order that's he will tiff to peace and security over the past 80 years. >> Reporter: china immediately responded by warning the U.S. to stop backing and selling arms to taiwan. Now, how are taiwanese rehe acting here? Well, some of them are saying that it's just like last year. It's just like 2022 when the chinese military held similar drills. They say that these chinese threats sadly are part of life. And that it hard to be a taiwanese. Arena announcer: She scores! >> Travis: U.S. federal forecasters are expecting what they call an extraordinary hurricane season this year. "the national" oceanic and atmospheric administration is predicting more major storms in 2024 than it ever has in its preseason outlook. >> This season is starting to be extraordinary one in a number of ways. Based on our data and models with the el nino and la nina playing out a significant role. Of note, the forecast for named storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes is the highest noaa has ever issued for the may outlook. >> Travis: darius madhavi is tracking this story for us from vancouver. He joins us now live. Darius darius, what's behind this extreme forecast? >> There's two big factors here. One is that we have extremely high temperatures in the rainy places where these hurricanes usually form. Now, these are either at or near record-breaking temperatures in the ocean. Much like we saw last year. But last year in 2023, even though it was the fourth most active hurricane season we've had in the atlantic, that was an el nino year. El nino usually inhikts hurricane formation in the atlantic. So the fact that we have the fourth most active season on record because of those sea surface temperatures, despite the fact we had conditions not right for hurricanes, means now as we're heading into a la nina summer, which does usually favour hurricane formation in the atlantic, it puts us in a bad spot. I want to look again at that chart that we saul earlier. If you take a look here you'll notice that there's an 85% chance that noaa says there's an 85% chance that this hurricane season is going to be above normal. Now, you can tell that from the bounds they've given here. The named storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes given here, those are all higher than the

average. The lower bounds of all those are higher than the average strms we get in a year, and that is unusual. As we heard, this is the most named storms they've ever predicted. If we want to dive in a little deeper to why they've give then forecast let's look here at the sea surface temperature anomalies. You'll notice that even though we have an el nino still in effect, it is quickly waning. We're seeing sea surface temperatures drop a lot compared to before. Not sure why it's glitching out. Sorry about that. La nina usually favours hurricane formation in the atlantic. Largely because it means there's a weaker subtropical jet stream. That means there's not strong winds over top of the hurricane pushing the top off of those thunder clouds. Pushing that warm moils air away from the hurricane centre. It let's the energy be concentrated a lot more evenly inside the hurricane, which means that the hurricane can grow a lot stronger. The other thing here we should focus on is the surface temperatures in the atlantic itself. Yul notice this area here in particular, the atlantic main development region, also known as hurricane alley. This is where where we see he those really high -- this is where we see those hurricanes form most of the time. You'll notice really, really high surface temperatures there. Just to compare that to one of the most active hurricane seasons on record, 2005, second most active season on record, take a look at the same this last week, may 14-20. How high sea surface temperatures were then, which at the time were extremely high, record breaking even. Compare that to 2024. And I think that's a pretty god picture of what we're looking at a travis. >> Travis: yeah, a lot of red there. So you taukdz a little bit about this, but let's dig deeper into what this forecast could mean for atlantic canada. >> Right. So this is a limb bit trickier. Not all hurricanes will come up to atlantic canada. It's actually relatively rare. Knows fearic conditions have to be just right. Even if we have an active season, 2005, 2020 the two most active on record, didn't actually bring much damage if at all to atlantic canada. In 2020 the biggest impact we saw was with hurricane teddy. We didn't see too much damage there fortunately. Everyone should be ready with your emergency kits, but hopefully this season will once again avoid the worst of it for canada. >> Travis: darius, appreciate it.
