a big budget announcement. Now we don't know for sure that it's actually going to come into force by june when it was originally supposed to. A bill is going to be introduced. We don't have a guarantee it will be introduced. It kind of smacks of policy on the fly and desperate attempt to address the housing crisis that would affect ai investments in the country, or the amount of family doctors we have. And I think that is going to be the problem as the federal liberals move with the strategy of trying to speak to the youth vote again as they had back in 2015. They need substance to back up the videos, too. >> Rosemary: I will say on the cap gains, I'm told it will happen, they don't need the legislation, there is a piece in the budget that will allow it. Whether they're communicating that well enough to the country, I don't know. Charelle, tell me what you make of the strategy in terms of what it tells you about how the liberals are doing? >> Well -- [sigh] >> Rosemary: [laughter] that was a deep sigh. Gosh, charette. >> I think there is always a bit of a risk in maybe not necessarily understanding who the demographics are, who it is they're talking to or targeting. Kelly raises a good point, is there substance to it, is it fun? Millennials have been the catchall sin anonymous for the worst kinds of kids these days -- sinmons. I think people forget it's a very specific age group of people. We're talking early 40s now to late 20s. These are parents and homeowners and people who can't afford to be either of those things, but want to be or don't want to be, or wherever you full into that spectrum. And then you have gen zed who now are the oldest of which maybe first-time voters but maybe have voted in the last election. It's not just about, kids these days type of thing. It can't just be how do you do, zooming in on the skateboard type of feel, you have to have something to go with it to say, hey, this is where we are as a government, this is what we have to offer. The liberals are playing catchup. The conservatives have carved out this space for themselves when it comes to reaching people, the Facebook-STYLE memes and graphics. Because they employ the people who have done those things and made them their bread and butter. So liberals are playing catchup and it shows. They're not quite to the level and reach that the conservatives have and made the carving out of the niche. So it does speak to how well can they back it up with whatever they're putting out? >> Rosemary: they have the policies that they think will speak to these generations, but I guess you're at the point I'm taking from everybody here, you have to talk about those things, you can't just play sabrina carpenter to kelly's point. I agree the cap gains video was well done and well explained. There is a policy from abacus that shows -- two now that show a little bit of a bump there. I don't know. Is that enough to base a strategy on? Is that because they need to open up this pathway or reopen the path for this group of voters? >> You know, like bob dylan said back in 1965 when you ain't got nothing you ain't got nothing to lose. >> I'll be the grandpa generation. >> What did sabrina carpenter say about it, though? >> Charelle mentioned the skateboarding and it reminded me of jagmeet singh's skateboarding video and tiktok and instagram. If they were success in canada, I think jagmeet singh would be prime minister. I find them kind of cringe-y, but I think it is smart for the liberals to be aiming at younger voters, because remember in 2015, they won -- they increased the size of the voting pie by -- with two very key things. Promising to legalize marijuana, which they did and promising electoral reform which they didn't. They broke that promise. Trudeau said this is the last election on first-past-the-post. There is probably regret, because if they managed to pull

off electoral reform, they wouldn't be staring at a majority government of the conservatives in 2025. I think it's smart to go after the younger voters, but they have to have something of substance. It can be tricky videos and fun memes. >> I am also gen x, so I find them odd, but they're not talking to me. It's not about me. Kelly, the other issue I guess, in our show meeting, great, get their attention, get them talking about the policies. It's another thing to get them to come out and actually vote. >> What we're seeing in the polling numbers is a move for the liberals on the youth vote. That's important. It's not a trend yet. What we're talking about is an election that is more than a year away. How do they sustain this? Through what we know is going to be still a tough period for the big issue, housing affordability. We might see an interest rate cut next month, but we still have a lot of people that year renewing mortgages at a much higher rate than before. We have a lot of significant rent increases. We still have a government that hasn't fully taken control it seems of its nonpermanent residence system. So I think there is still a lot of pain to come for the liberal and they have to make sure they have something left to give before the election. And I feel like on the capital gains inclusion rate, for instance, I know what you're saying that it can be passed, but also the timing of that is making sure they're hammering pierre poilievre on it as well, making sure that he takes a stand on it one way or another. So I think there is a long way to go. And the pain that people, that canadians are going to be feeling, especially the demographic that the liberals need to court, that's still a huge big issue for them. >> Rosemary: charelle, last word to you. >> I think the U.K. election might be a little instructive as to what we're going to see. There is already talk about branding this as the tiktok election. And they're in kind of the same boat. Stand on government devices, that kind of thing, but people are really leaning in. I don't know if tiktok is going to be enough to break the pattern that canadian voters are entrenched in, voting out governments especially after a decade, but it will be interesting to see how much social media plays. >> Rosemary: glad you brought that up. Labour probably will win, so that is probably not what the liberals wanted to hear. >> Yeah, a dichotomy with a conservative government fates facing the same problem here as the U.K. >> Charelle, rob, kelly, thank you, all. Have a good rest of your sunday. Still ahead, iran's exiled prince speaks out about the war between israel and hamas. >> We'll continue fighting until the day we are liberated from this regime. Officials continue to gothrough the rubble of destroyed homes lookingfor more victims, but they say thatdowned power lines are making the jobmore difficult. Across the United States,at least 13 people have been killed this weekendalone due to tornadoes. [ ] >> Rosemary: the iranian military has found no evidence of criminal activity in the helicopter crash that killed president ebrahim raisi and seven others. That's according to iranian state media. The report on the crash says the helicopter caught fire after hitting an elevated area. The wreckage has been found in the northern region. So what does the president's death mean for the future of iran? What role is the iranian government playing in the israel-hamas war? Earlier I spoke to iran's exiled crown prince, reza pahlavi. His father was ousted in 1979 and the country transformed into the republic we see today. Reza pahlavi is an advocate for a secular iran and he's calling on canada to label the revolutionary guard a terrorist group. I spoke to him on friday from washington. Joining me now is reza pahlavi. Thank you so much for being here, your royal highness. >> My pleasure. >> Rosemary: I want to start with the death of the iranian president, ebrahim raisi and the foreign minister in the helicopter crash a week ago. And your thoughts about the impact that could have on iran's domestic and foreign policies or does it have any impact at all? >> Basically every aspect of politics in iran is ultimately controlled by the supreme leader, especially when it comes to foreign policies, so I don't think there is going to be much of a change in terms of the replacement of mr. Ebrahim raisi. It's probably going to be more of the same. I think we shouldn't anticipate any shift from that particular policy. >> Rosemary: how were those deaths viewed inside iran from what you've heard? >> Well, from what we get from iranian social media, there was many, many celebrations across the country with fireworks, with people distributing sweets to one another and being relieved that one of the most sinister characters of this regime that has been directly responsible for the death of thousands of iranians under his watch, has met his maker. We only wish he was there to witness the downfall of the regime and be held accountable for his crimes. This is water under the bridge. The fire continues for iranians to liberate themselves its and we'll continue fighting until we're liberated from this regime. >> Rosemary: I want to talk about where you think that is, but the want to talk about the supreme leader meeting with the leader of hamas. The reigning government supports hamas. What is your view about the role that iran a is playing in that war and then the proxy wars happening around it? >> Obviously, the approach that ebrahim raisi had is justification of proxy wars he has maintained throughout these last 30 years, since the end of the iranian-iraq wars. They have silenced them, equipped them with weapons and all sorts. As a result, we've seen that it

is interfering in the region and trying to establish his own regiment under the shi'ite calumet and they're bringing their proxies to bring more pressure in the region, whether it's hamas or hezbollah or islamic jihad or even the houthis. This is part of the proxy involvement in the immediate region and well beyond that with the irgc that stretches to venezuela and other places. >> Rosemary: where do you think the people of iran stand or what are they thinking about the escalating tensions between israel and iran right now? >> I think the people of iran have always tried to message the world that a liberated iran, a democratic iran, will seek only peace and good relations with our neighbours, whether it's the arabs and the israelis, completely opposite what this regime has been standing for. The only way to eliminate the problem is by this regime no longer being in power. The guarantee of having an opportunity for the whole world to be released of the problematics involved with the regime. Whether it is nuclear threat, terrorism, or radicalism spreading. Put an end to it. It's why we have the escalation unless we offer a better solution and that means investing on the people of iran as the alternative at the end of the day. That's why I think the canadian government and other governments should support the iranian people and bring as much as there is economic sanctions to put pressure on the regime, but parallel to that, a policy on maximum support to give people equal footing to be able to, you know, fight against an extremely repressive regime. >> Rosemary: you were recently in canada and met with government officials. Is that the message you sent to them? And what does that look like for canada to support iranians without being caught up in support of the regime? >> Well, first of all, I would like to offer my appreciation from the state, coming from prime minister trudeau, that rather than sending condolences it was support in the iranian people which is what we expect from democratic leaders. I think canada could do more. One of the key issues on the table is the inscription of the irgc as a terrorist organization. This is something critical because if you look at it, irgc has been the main operating mechanism whether at home or interference abroad. That is additional pressure on the regime, but it also sends a strong signal to the iranian people that we are taking measures. And beyond that and I think depending on which political party is more inclined to do that, one of the key issues inned in is the money laundering operations by the regime. These have to be dealt with politically. My approach to foreign governments, has been expectation of bipartisan support. It should not be exclusively one party when it comes to human rights and liberty, although some parties are more responsible than others. But in general, I think canada is showing at least that they have the correct approach, but we hope they will do more. I think the precedence is set and that should be the case of the g7. It will be critical to have the inscription of the irgc as a terrorist organization. It's been legislated for, but governments have to make the final decision. >> Rosemary: there was a motion where it was voted on in parliament here, although that's not binding for the government. One of the -- I'm sure you know -- one of the reasons the government has given for not doing that is complexity in labelling who you would go after given you are forced to participate in military service in iran. Do you understand that reasoning? Or do you think they're making it more complicated than it needs to be? >> There is a possible answer to that problem in the sense that you could say as of now, whoever continues with the irgc will be subject to that, but those prior are now residents in canada, it may not necessarily have to apply to them retroactively. That's one way of satisfying the concerns of government that hesitate doing that because of that issue, but at the same time it doesn't eliminate the fact that the we have to hold the irgc accountable. This may be a way around it and I don't know if it could be implemented or not. >> Rosemary: what needs to happen to make sure that the war we're seeing in israel and gaza doesn't get to be a broader war? What kind of things need to happen from the international community? >> Looking beyond the status quo and limiting your options to either diplomacy which has failed and conflict, military intervention, which is not desirable. As a result, you're faced with

only one possibility, that direct support to the people of iran as the agent of change. It starts from the inside of the country. It doesn't require foreign intervention if you opt for that strategy. On the other hand, if the iranian people are not given the proper support, you have other options less desirable lingering. All of us want to avoid conflict because that's definitely lose-lose. I believe the only win-win solution for the world and the iranian people is to get rid of the regime. There has to be a decision made about regime change. Why do I say that? Because the free world was based on the false premise of expecting behaviour change by the regime. And behaviour cannot change in this regime, because the dna is what it is. They're not about to change face. You cannot turn a wolf into a sheep. You cannot redesign and change that. That won't ever happen. So therefore, rather than lingering on expecting that attitude to -- behaviour to change, the solution is the regime itself has to no longer be there. So regime change ought to be the final solution. That's what the people of iran are crying for. 80% of iranian society are done with the regime. They want to go beyond the regime. I hope the world acknowledges this is ultimately the desire of freedom-seeking iranians and be on the right side of history. >> Rosemary: thank you so much for making the time. Appreciate it, sir.
