[ ] >> Natasha: the competition bureau has opened a new probe into anti-competitive behaviour of the parent companies of loblaws and sobeys. Now, that's according to documents seen by "the canadian press." cbc's scott peterson is foowing. Scott: yeah, we're hearing that this is another black eye for the grocery industry as if they haven't had enough bad press already. This has to do with documents that canadian press has seen filed by the competition bureau back on may 6 in regards to anti-competitive behaviour, including in particular property control limits and these property control limits, this is what the competition bureau is saying are unfair competition because when they sign lease agreements, whether it is loblaws group of companies or empire that they have a contract with the lessee that they cannot lease any space to any other grocers and the competition bureau calls this anti-competitive. Through both subsidiaries as well that loblaws and empire also own the property renters that they in effect some of their subsidiaries rent from subsidiaries they already own to make complicated matters further. We have calls out to loblaws and sobeys. So far this is just a C.P. story having seen the documents back to may 6. The competition bureau has been armed with extra teeth in to ottawa and the bill c-56 bill passed last fall. This is about anti-competitive manipulation of leases is no longer allowed by the competition bureau. We're watching this story as it

continues and we have calls out on the street to confirm this. >> Natasha: cbc's scott peterson reporting. >>> If your first seafood experience was at red lobster, this next story may be tough to swallow. They're filing for bankruptcy in the united states. Cbc's sophia harris has more. >> Reporter: the casual dining chain that serves up seafood to the masses is in hot water. Red lobster has filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. and is in the process of doing the same in canada cbc news has learned. Already, the chain has shut down close to 100 U.S. locations, putting hundreds out of work. >> Kind of a nightmare because it's just like being separated from something you've been part of your life for 40 years. >> Reporter: there are 27 red lobsters in canada which employ around 2,000 workers. Their fate is not yet known as the chain grapples with hundreds of millions of dollars of debt. >> They filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection which gives them a lot of runway to figure out whether they are going to continue to operate in canada. [ ] >> Reporter: there is speculation red lobster got into deep debt by offering all-you-can-eat shrimp in the U.S. but some experts say the 56-year-old chain faltered by not changing with the times. >> Red lobster, popular with the boomers and the older demographics, but really did not do anything to attract that younger consumer through any innovation and just upscaling overall. >> Reporter: red lobster's canadian restaurants remain open and loyal customers hope it stays that way. >> One of my favourite spots to eat. >> I hope they can restructure everything and keep her going. We'll try getting here knowing they need more customers. >> Reporter: can the canadian red lobster restaurants be saved? >> With the right group coming in, that management and leadership team, that red lobster in canada could be salvaged. >> Reporter: on tuesday ontario courts are expected to grant red lobster bankruptcy protection, giving it a chance to stay on the menu in canada. [ ] >> I want them back. >> Natasha: after almost a decade, we are returning to the world of "mad max." "furiosa" is in theatres today. It is the follow up to "fury road." this time anya taylor-joy is in the film as well as chris hemsworth. Eli glasner gave "fury road" a full five stars and he's back to see if the remake is just as

good. You liked the last one. Does it live up to the hype? >> Eli: you got me caught in my own trap. Yes, "furiosa" is existing in a world we already visited back to the wasteland telling a story of how a girl became the woman who was furiosa played by charlize theron. If hollywood has to keep making is he equals, and preequals, let it be as mad and rajs and creative as "furiosa: a mad max saga." bringing us back to the world of guns and grime, desert and dust, the wasteland. The only world you can have charks with names like scrotus, jeg, tortoise. It's like an iron maiden cover that has come to life. I will tell you, no word of a life, I sat in the theatre and was transfixed. When the movie ended, I stood up to leave and I was limping. I was so enraptured that I just froze because I wanted to take it all in. I'm broken now, I don't know why. I'm not complaining because I was very happy. >> Natasha: oh wow. Let's talk about the actual story then. Where does this story start? >> Eli: so we start with young furiosa. So we start withfuriosa a a girl actually played by aliah brown. She lives in a place that is like a hidden paradise in the middle of this wasteland, this desert. Now, she is captured by some scavengers. Her mother sees what's happening, jumps on a horse and chases after. Within minutes of this movie opening, we are already off to the races. There is the mom, she catches up. Things are looking dire. So she forces furiosa to commit. Take a look. >> Whatever you have to do, however long it promise me you'll find your way home. Let this be, protect the green place. Give me this one gift. >> Eli: that is a heck of a gift to give a 12-year-old, now alone, now abandoned, far from home, and now the prisoner of dr. Dementus. Let's meet that guy. >> Who do we have here? >> She's from a place of abundance. >> What's your name? [ ] >> Tomorrow we'll follow the tracks that brought you here and I'll take you on. >> Eli: I know it looks like some warped version of jesus christ superstar. That is merry christmas hemsworth as the doctor in question with that big nose. What is great about dr. Dementus, this warlord, we know hems worth as a handsome and charming guy and a thor, it weaponizes his charisma. Now he is a maniacal sadist leading this gang of bikers has captured furiosa. When he hears there is another warlord, you remember from the previous film morton joe, he's got water and food and women, dementus wants come of that and leads his biker gang to attack. >> Bring them to me and fry them down. You'll rule with me in the splendour of a new land. >> Eli: he looks like a sand-swept pirate. I love it. Now you have these two warlords bashing heads and in the middle of that chaos and bike exhaust is young furiosa waiting, biding her time. >> Natasha: all right. It's time for the review. Double-pronged question for you, eli. What's your view? Does this movie measure up? I've never seen a mad max movie. I'm not saying it in a snobby way. Can I start with furiosa or do I need to go in the order? >> Eli: I think you can start with furiosa because it starts with the wasteland, post-apocalyptic setting and this young girl. Even if you don't appreciate where it is heading, you'll be taken by the story. Compare it to fury road it is split into different chapters. We have some familiar characters returning, the chrome-covered boys that we see in that battle scene. One thing that maybe will make you dip your toe in the waters of mad max. This sequence is 20 minutes long

and it took them eight months to film this amazing scene where furiosa is on this war rig repelling invaders, there are flying paradeployeders dropping, now if this was all the movie, just the speckcle and all the carnage, that would be fun and shallow. What makes this special is anya taylor-joy as the woman in question, as furiosa. And almost a silent movie. She barely talks. She has 30 lines. She doesn't need anything. Look at those eyes. She is -- her fuel is revenge. That is her high-octane, unleded fuel source. She is a woman on a mission. That is the man she is on a mission for and it is a remarkable, elemental performance with her and then dr. Dementus, these are two souls that have been warped by the wasteland and that is what makes this such a special ride. Would you like my star rating? >> Natasha: yes, please. >> Eli: all right, star rating is 4.5 stars out of 5. Half a star deducted just for lack of originality. It is a party and a riot. Go see it. >> Natasha: you need to keep your extra star. Nooch. >>> We have other entertainment news. This is sad and breaking a little bit earlier in the day. The man behind the ground-breaking documentary film "supersize me" has died. >> I love big macs. This is a big mac that almost looks like the picture. Look that. >> Natasha: his documentary was nominated for an academy award. For the film he spent a month eating nothing but McDONALD'S food to he will strait the dangers. He gained 25 pounds and suffered from liver dysfunction and depression. A statement today from spurlock's family said he died in new york due to complications due to cancer. Spurlock was only 53 years old. [ ] >>The Great Canadian Baking Showis back. >> It's time to get whisked away into a magical tent. >> Whisked away? I see what you did there. The landslide struck at 3:00 A.M. local time, levelling as many as a hundred homes in six remote villages. Disaster officials are working to locate bodies and rebuild crucial infrastructure. Residents were seen searching through the dirt for any survivors and local media reporting at least 100 people have died, although officials haven't confirmed those numbers. The prime minister said authorities will release more information as it becomes available. >>> Okay, folks, it's time for a look now at the national weather forecast heading into the weekend. Let's check in with chris murphy at the weather new york. >> Chris: this friday very mild and warm in southern ontario and especially nova scotia with some sunshine. The west is a little more cool and a little more unsettled. Rain showers and thunderstorms. On the west coast, periods of rain for today and likely again tomorrow. Just zooming in on metro vancouver up the sunshine coast of vancouver island. Umbrellas both days. Hard to make outdoor plans with any consistency. It looks like steadier rain will be coming in through sunday and temperatures as well will be a bit of a disappointment. Vancouver is normally 19° and similar in victoria. You will be below that through the weekend. So that's sort of what you've got facing you. There will be scattered showers in southern alberta, but the steady rain through southern manitoba, gusty north winds even wet snow over higher terrain. Tomorrow gradual improving and sunday should be in the clear around the winnipeg area. Northwestern ontario getting some of the rain. 50-plus millimetres in the red river valley and the interlake region. This is tractors getting stuck in the field. 5 to 15 millimetres of rain on ooert side of the rockie mountains, but persistent could be more than that. Temperatures will remain seasonal into the weekend, but there will be a couple of days on the weekend where temperatures will warm up. A risk of a thunderstorm moving through the maritimes this afternoon and evening. A risk of rain for northern ontario tonight and southwestern ontario, you have a risk of showers and thunderstorms saturday. That clears out on sunday and then the next soaker moves in by early next week. >> The weather update is brought to you by the offcast mosquito forecast. Off. [ ] >> Natasha: hello, everyone. Welcome inside the cbc news newsroom. I'm natasha fatah. We begin with breaking news on the israel-hamas war. The international court of justice in the hague ordered israel to halt its offensive in rafah. South africa, the country that brought the original case of genocide to the court is hailing today's ruling as a victory. Although the larger question of the genocide allegation will be determined at a later date. Israel has also been ordered today to reopen the rafah border crossing to give investigators access to the area and to allow for the flow of aid and humanitarian measures. >> Israel must immediately halt its military offensive and any other action in the rafah area which may inflict on the palestinian group in gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part. >> Natasha: reporter alex cadier is outside of that court when that ruling came down. He has more on the ruling and the potential impact. >> Reporter: certainly this ruling we suspected would send a very clear message and it has done that. The court ordering israel to cease all military operations in are you awared. Also explaining some of the logic behind that decision. They say the humanitarian situation in rafah can be seen as disrarsous and they are not convinced that israel has put enough in place to cater to that humanitarian disaster or to allow for the safe evacuation of civilians. So two-fold measures there, one, the stopping of all military operations in rafah and to allow access to the united nations fact-finding mission in rafah as well. Clearly a message from the world court that israel has to and must do more and things have not improved since it last ordered israel to do so. Now the big question about the consequences is a little bit more complicated because although these are legally binding orders they are not enforceable. The international court of justice in the peace palace behind me does not have a police force to enforce these orders. What the U.N. can do is have the U.N. security council to pass regulations to sanction israel and have weapons embargoes and actions. But those can be vetoed by the united states.
