A caution to Broncos fans

For the second consecutive week, in a locker room beaming with confidence, head coach Vance Joseph has uttered the words, “success is not final” following the first two wins. The Broncos have plenty to be smiling about these days. Denver sent a message to the rest of the league last Sunday afternoon after dominating the Cowboys; a team that all the experts picked to leave the Mile High City with a win. Despite the hot start, success is anything but final after two weeks.

Since the NFL expanded to 12 playoff teams in 1990, 63 percent of teams to start 2-0 have gone on to make the playoffs. For the Broncos, going 2-0 isn’t anything new. From 2001, Denver has now started 2-0 twelve times and with six different quarterbacks.

However, Broncos recent history suggests that being undefeated after two weeks carries no guarantee of a trip to the post season. In previous 2-0 starts, Denver made the playoffs in only five of those seasons and only twice if you take future hall of famer Peyton Manning out of the picture.

Fans don’t have to look far to see the last time the team started fast and missed the playoffs. Just a year ago, the Trevor Siemian led offense and imposing defense started 4-0 only to finish 9-7, in part due to losing four of six to end the year including a late game collapse against the Chiefs at home on Sunday night football. With three minutes remaining, Denver’s defense fell out of character and let Alex Smith drive 80 yards to score and get the two-point conversion to tie and later win in overtime. If you looked closely, it was clear that something was missing in a team that just the year before carried a championship DNA.

Through two weeks, the 2017 Broncos look very different from a season ago. Thanks to a fresh C.J. Anderson and the compliment of Jamaal Charles, Denver currently ranks first in rushing yards per game (27th in 2016). Add in the fact that Denver currently holds the third best rushing defense (28th in 2016) and this team deserves the early season praise.

The Broncos are not the only undefeated team in the league and even in their own division. Seven other teams currently stand at 2-0 including the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders. Both of which have looked equally if not more impressive. Chiefs’ quarterback Alex Smith is playing the best football of his career and Raiders’ running back Marshawn Lynch looks rejuvenated in his home city. Denver’s true test is still to come.

With four of their first five games at home, the Broncos put themselves in the position they absolutely needed to be in to start the year. Make no mistake though, the Broncos’ season will be determined by how the team performs in its final six games, with four of those on the road, including a final trip to the black hole, and a New Year’s Eve season finale at home against the Chiefs.

The 2016 Broncos fell into a trap. After winning the super bowl, a team can lose its edge. Many call it the super bowl hang over. Hopefully the 2017 Broncos learned from a season ago, that in the NFL, success is never final; it’s earned every week.
