Catawba Ridge football spoils Indian Land’s homecoming, earns key victory
Coming off a bye week, Catawba Ridge spoiled Indian Land’s homecoming with steady play on both sides of the ball.
Catawba started the game off hot on its first possession, with senior running back Brayden Wasik bursting for a 16-yard and a 11-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback C.J. Couch.
On Catawba’s next possession, Couch connected with senior wide receiver Brayden Burgis in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown, giving Catawba a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
In the second half, Indian managed to get its offense on track after generating only 44 yards in the first half.
Indian Land controlled the clock and managed to wear down the Catawba defense in the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 62-yard drive that was capped off with a 1-yard quarterback sneak by sophomore quarterback Sequel Patterson.
With three minutes left in the game, Catawba’s offense continued to struggle to move the ball, but the defense rallied to keep Indian Land from making a comeback.
“Moving forward, we have to be able to finish the game a little bit better,” said Catawba Ridge coach Zac Lendyak. “We scored 14 quick points and not again for the rest of the game. We gotta make sure we score and take pressure off of the defense.”
In the second half, Catawba’s defense was on the field long for multi-play drives, while the offense only ran 16 plays in the second half.
Indian Land’s Patterson took advantage of the possessions and attacked the defense with a series of rushing attempts by him and junior running back Jamol Horton.
Despite the rushing effort, Indian Land could not complete a comeback mainly because of penalties and Catawba’s defense.
Indian Land earned 14 penalties for 111 yards.
