The midfield really let Manchester United down last season and judging from the previous result against Liverpool, Erik ten Hag is yet to find a way around the problem.

Casemiro has continued his disappointing showings at the base of the midfield and after the disastrous first-half display against Arne Slot’s side, there have been numerous reports linking the Brazilian with an impending exit.

For now, the former Real Madrid superstar is expected to stay but this is expected to be his last season in red following Manuel Ugarte’s acquisition from Paris Saint-Germain.

Another midfielder whose future lies away from Old Trafford is Christian Eriksen, with the Dane’s minutes drastically reducing post Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence last term.

Double departure on the cards

The former Tottenham Hotspur star was linked with an exit in the summer but no concrete bids were received. With Toby Collyer tipped to breakthrough, the 32-year-old is unlikely to get too many starts this campaign.

And as per Givemesport, INEOS are already planning for the double departure and are looking to strengthen in the middle of the park further ahead of the next season.

At least one more signing is expected and the club remain open to business as early as January should a long-term target become available.

“Manchester United have set their sights on making further alterations to their midfield when the transfer window reopens in 2025 as plans have been put in place to secure long-term replacements for Old Trafford duo Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

Midfield additions being planned

“GMS sources have been informed that this will be Casemiro and Eriksen’s final season in a Manchester United shirt, and Ashworth has been challenged to bring in youthful alternatives.

“GMS sources have been told that Manchester United are planning to sign at least one more midfielder before the start of the 2025/26 campaign, despite the signing of Ugarte being a step in the right direction, and it is possible that fresh options will be brought in during the winter window as well as next summer.”

The report also interestingly adds that the new co-owners will continue to target younger profiles with resale value instead of adding a big-name player who might be looking for one last payday, a strategy often employed by the Glazers.

While no targets have been mentioned, United will save a considerable amount in wages should Casemiro and Eriksen leave next summer, which could be a huge boost to finances.
