The Case Against Will Borgen's Big Contract Extension
Defenseman Will Borgen very well might have cost the Rangers a playoff berth with his bum play yesterday at The Garden.
Mistakenly placed on a late third period power play by coach Peter Laviolette – who still must be dreaming of a White Christmas – Borgen's pass to Breadman Panarin cost New York the game.
It was easily intercepted by Cale Makar and – well – you know the rest. Why was Borgen on the power play to begin with? His name isn't Adam Fox.
What was Borgen thinking before making the pass? He knew that Makar was due out of the penalty box and wasn't about to take the Brighton Express to Coney Island.
But Borgen, the 27-year-old Seattle Kraken discard, did what you'd expect him NOT to do; blow it.
"Borgen was in danger of losing his job with Seattle before the Kappo Kakko deal," says The Maven's Insider, Jess Rubenstein.
"What's funny is that Borgen signed his Rangers extension the same day that The Hockey News did a story on how Kakko is now on Seattle's first line."
There was absolutely no need for Chris Drury to impetuously sign Borgen, 28, to a five year $20.5 million extension.
Not only that but the GM philanthropically raised him from $2.7 million to $4.1 million. And for what? Going minus 2 against Colorado and costing his team two points in a tight playoff race.
Perhaps Drury was dreaming of J.T. Miller in a Rangers uniform. That could happen today or tomorrow or sometime when the planet Mars enters the NHL as an expansion team.
Let's be honest Drury could have played the Patience Card and waited until this one time third pair Seattle Kraken earned a new deal after some more months of steady play. Then again, that made too much sense.
As for possible acquisitions other than Miller there are 2025 centers who'll be available.
Ever hear of John (I Never Should Have Left The Island) Tavares? Or Brock Nelson or Ryan Donato?
Tavares as a Ranger would make one heck of a story; all he'd need is a change of pajamas!
