Carolina Panthers make 10 roster moves as injuries pile up ahead of preseason finale

The Carolina Panthers have made 10 roster moves ahead of the final week of the NFL preseason.

On Monday, the team announced it re-signed running back Jaden Shirden, cornerback Willie Drew and wide receiver Sam Pinckney, who were all part of the team’s initial undrafted free agent class in April. The Panthers also added defensive backs Chris Wilcox and Quandre Mosley to the 90-man roster.

To make room for those five arrivals, the team placed veteran quarterback Jake Luton and defensive back Anthony Brown on injured reserve. Carolina also waived wide receiver Tayvion Robinson and cornerback Lamar Jackson with injury designations. Running back Dillon Johnson, who scored a touchdown on the final play of Saturday’s loss to the New York Jets, was also waived.

Jackson’s waiving is the most notable of the moves, as he was considered one of the biggest winners of training camp entering the second preseason game. Jackson made several plays in training camp and held opposing receivers to one catch for three yards on six targets in the preseason, according to Pro Football Focus.

However, Jackson left Saturday’s matchup early with a knee injury. If Jackson passes through waivers, he will revert back to the Panthers’ injured reserve list.

The other four players were on the outside looking in when it came to the 53-man roster.

Shirden, Drew and Pinckney will look to make the most of their second chances by playing well in the preseason. Pinckney was waived early in camp, while Drew and Shirden both played in the preseason opener against the New England Patriots before being cut last week.

Wilcox, a 2021 seventh-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will look to impress the Panthers to earn a spot on their practice squad. The same can be said for Mosley, who played in one game for the Patriots in 2022.

The Panthers are dealing with several notable injuries. Shirden, Drew, Pinckney, Mosley and Wilcox will take practice reps and play Saturday against the Bills in Buffalo to wrap up the preseason.
