Carolina Hurricanes Pull Off Historic, Blockbuster Trade In Three-Team Deal

The Carolina Hurricanes just pulled off the biggest trade in franchise history.

In a three-team trade between Carolina, the Colorado Avalanche and the Chicago Blackhawks the Hurricanes took a swing for the fences.

Coming to Raleigh is superstar winger Mikko Rantanen (50% retained by Chicago), former MVP Taylor Hall and 21-year-old prospect Nils Juntorp.

Going to Colorado is Hurricanes leading scorer Martin Necas and depth center Jack Drury along with Carolina's 2025 second-round pick and 2026 fourth-round pick.

Going to Chicago is the Blackhawks own 2025 third-round pick which the Canes acquired last year.

“Mikko is one of the premiere power forwards in our sport," said Carolina GM Eric Tulsky in a press release. "It’s no secret that we’ve wanted to add elite skill to our lineup, and this is a player who should fit our system and locker room well. And Taylor gives us another high-skill option to bolster our attack.”

Rantanen, 28, is is a proven scorer and the kind of superstar talent the Hurricanes have been lacking.

The Finnish superstar is coming off of back-to-back 100+ point seasons and has scored at least 30 goals in four straight.

The winger is physically imposing standing at 6-foot-4 and 215lbs and he's just an all-around elite talent everywhere inside the offensive zone.

A Stanley Cup champion, Rantanen has 34 goals and 99 points in 81 postseason games.

Rantanen is in the final year of a six-year, $9.25 million AAV deal and is in line for a huge pay day. There is no extension in place yet, but the Canes have a good cap situation going into the future, so one shouldn't be a problem., but he'll easily become the Hurricanes' highest paid player.

Hall, 33, is in the final year of a four-year, $6 million contract.

The 2010 first overall pick has bounced around the league as of late and is now onto his seventh team.

The veteran winger has nine goals and 24 points in 46 games with the Blackhawks and is coming off of knee surgery on a torn ACL in his right knee that he suffered in November of 2023.

Despite the down years as of late, Hall was a proven scorer and good power forward in his prime.

The veteran has had seven 20+ goal seasons and his best year came in 2017-18 when he had 39 goals and 93 points, taking home the Hart Trophy that year as the league MVP.

He also has 14 goals and 29 points in 39 postseason games.

To get talent, you have to give up talent and the Canes had to move their leading scorer, Martin Necas, to get it.

Necas, 26, is one of the league's top skaters and a blossoming star.

There were so many times when that talent was clearly on display in Carolina, but he also wasn't nearly consistent enough, especially in the postseason.

It's not to say that the Czech winger won't put it together, as he was jockeying for the league lead in scoring in the first few months of the season, but the Hurricanes opted for a more proven player in Rantanen instead.

Necas was also in the first year of a two-year, $6 million AAV deal and would be a UFA at the end of it and there's no guarantee that Carolina would have been able to re-sign him anyway.

Regardless, Necas is a tough loss for the Canes as he was a well-liked player and definitely a fun player to watch. I'm sure he'll be a bright star in Colorado.

Joining him will be 24-year-old center Jack Drury.

Drury earned a permanent spot on the Canes' roster due to his versatility and fearless nature.

The young center was a defensive stalwart with a strong presence in the faceoff dot and he played on both the penalty kill and power play.

He'll bring a dependable game to the Avalanche.

Drury had one year remaining on a two-year, $1.73 million AAV deal.

It's clear that these moves prove that the Hurricanes are all-in on being a true Stanley Cup contender this season.

The combination of Rantanen and Hall adds not only high-end scoring but also size and versatility to the lineup which should prove vital in the playoffs.

It's a new era of Hurricanes hockey and it will almost certainly be a fun team to watch.
