Carolina Hurricanes 2024 Stats In Review

The Carolina Hurricanes have been one of the league's best teams for years now and 2024 was no exception.

As we enter a new year, let's take a look back at how the Hurricanes did in 2024.

In 2024, the Hurricanes had the second most wins (54) in the entire NHL behind only the Winnipeg Jets (57), but they in fact led the league in points percentage (0.689).

Despite that though, it was a step down in terms of playoff success as they lost in the second round of the postseason to the New York Rangers after defeating the New York Islanders in the first round in five games.

But again, the regular season was really good.

Carolina had the second best home record (31-11-1) and the eighth best road record (23-12-4).

The team also scored the eighth most goals (282) while allowing the least (200).

Despite that, the Canes' top scorer for 2024, Sebastian Aho, finished only 17th in league scoring for the calendar year with 87 points. His 33 goals also ranked 31st.

It was also a really good year for their special teams as they had the second best power play (26.5%) and the best penalty kill (87.7%) with the eighth most shorthanded goals scored (8).

Carolina spent a lot of time shorthanded, being sixth in terms of shorthanded time on ice per game (5:12) and on the flip side, they also drew the fifth least amount of calls overall (275).

The Hurricanes were also last in the league in major penalties taken with just five.

In a bit of a shocking twist, the Canes did not actually average the most shots per game as they finished just 0.2 shots per game behind the top spot Edmonton Oilers (32.9), however they did in fact allow the least amount of shots against per game (25.3).

Carolina was also the fifth best faceoff team, winning 53.1% of their draws.

2024 has also been the year of Pyotr Kochetkov as he's been the only Hurricanes netminder, of the six that they used, to play north of 15 games.

In 45 starts, Kochetkov had a 28-13-2 record with a 0.910 save percentage and four shutouts.

The Russian netminder also picked up three points and eight penalty minutes as well.

Despite the low number of games, when he's been available, Frederik Andersen has been terrific as he had a 0.949 save percentage in 14 games in 2024.

The Canes were also the second least physical team in the league with just 1,474 hits, beating out the Dallas Stars by just 41, and blocked the least amount of shots (946), the only team below 1,000 blocks.

The Hurricanes also had the second most empty-net goals (25) and led the league in missed shots (1,499).

Since the topic of shootouts is fresh in the mind following last night's 4-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina was 1-5 in shootouts in 2024, scoring just three goals across 24 attempts (Aho, Andrei Svechnikov and Jake Guentzel). They also saved just 17 shots on 24 attempts against.

Overall, the team was 6-5 in games that went beyond regulation, meaning that they were 5-0 in games decided in the five-minute overtime period.

Aho once again led the way there too with three overtime goals in 2024.
