Carabao Cup draw LIVE! Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United learn third-round fate
Carabao Cup draw LIVE!
The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup takes place tonight, with 32 teams set to learn their assignments for the next stage of the competition. The Premier League clubs involved in European action this term all enter the fray at this juncture, though, Chelsea aside, will be kept apart amid the significant revamps made to both the Champions League and Europa League by Uefa.
None of Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham or Manchester United can be paired together in round three, with those clubs involved in a pre-draw exercise earlier on tonight that determined who would be playing at home or away. Last night’s winners and the victors of Wednesday night’s remaining seven second-round fixtures enter proceedings as normal for the main part of the draw, which takes place after the televised all-Premier League clash between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle at the City Ground, which the visitors won on penalties.
The northern and southern sections of the draw no longer apply in round three, with no geographical restrictions on any ties at this stage. Follow live coverage below of the draw for the third round of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup!

Newcastle edge past Nottingham Forest on penalties

Newcastle hold their nerve to complete the third-round lineup in the 2024/25 Carabao Cup!
Sean Longstaff successfully dispatches the winning penalty after the Magpies get away with a miss from Joelinton.
Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi with costly back-to-back misses for Forest.
Nottingham Forest and Newcastle set for penalties
22:01 , George Flood
Despite an exciting finish to proceedings at the City Ground, Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest and Newcastle can’t be separated.
It’s another penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw that saw new Forest signing Jota Silva cancel out Joe Willock’s 18-second opener with his first goal in English football.
The third-round draw will follow the conclusion of this shootout, so we’ll be getting underway slightly later than planned.
AFC Wimbledon stun Premier League Ipswich on penalties
21:51 , George Flood
Another upset at Plough Lane!
Premier League new boys Ipswich have been dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the second-round stage by fourth-tier AFC Wimbledon on penalties.
Johnnie Jackson’s League Two promotion chasers win 4-2 on spot-kicks after a pulsating 2-2 draw, with Jack Taylor and Omari Hutchinson missing for the Tractor Boys.
What a night for the Dons! Two upsets now tonight after Wycombe ousted Swansea in South Wales.
West Ham and Brentford go through as Ipswich taken to penalties
21:48 , George Flood
West Ham and Brentford are now into round three after those respective 1-0 wins over Bournemouth and Colchester.
It’s penalties between AFC Wimbledon and Ipswich at Plough Lane, though.
Still playing in the 8pm kick-off at the City Ground, where it remains 1-1 between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle.
Jarrod Bowen strikes late for West Ham as Southampton win epic
21:44 , George Flood
All manner of late drama in tonight’s concluding Carabao Cup second-round ties!
Captain Jarrod Bowen has struck late at the London Stadium to surely book West Ham’s safe progress at Bournemouth’s expense.
Meanwhile, Southampton have eventually won an eight-goal classic in Cardiff 5-3 after stoppage-time goals from James Bree and Cameron Archer. Gutting for the Bluebirds.
Ipswich are level at AFC Wimbledon through Conor Chaplin, though Swansea have been dumped out by Wycombe in a shock thanks to that Richard Kone goal.
Wolves sail through as Colchester miss late penalty
21:31 , George Flood
It’s all over at Molineux, where Wolves have eased past relegated Burnley 2-0 thanks to a goal in either half from Goncalo Guedes.
They are into the third round of the Carabao Cup for the fourth season in a row.
Has fourth-tier Colchester’s best shot at dragging Premier League Brentford to penalties now gone, meanwhile?
Danny Cowley’s side earned a late penalty for a foul on Mandela Egbo, but it’s been saved by Hakon Valdimarsson.
Jack Payne the man denied.
New signing Jota Silva smashes Nottingham Forest level
21:21 , George Flood
All square in tonight’s all-Premier League showdown at the City Ground.
It’s evidently a night for Portuguese wingers, with new £5.9m Nottingham Forest signing Jota Silva smashing a brilliant effort off the woodwork to bring Nuno Espirito Santo’s side level at 1-1 against Newcastle.
Talk about impressing on your full debut!
Can Forest go on and grab a winner now, or are we destined for the lottery of spot-kicks that may well delay the start of tonight’s televised third-round draw?
Cardiff level Southampton thriller once again
21:11
What a game at the Cardiff City Stadium, where it’s now 3-3 after Alex Robertson hit back yet again for the hosts to quickly cancel out Cameron Archer’s first Southampton goal.
Three goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half.
And more to come no doubt!
Two second-round shocks are still on the cards in Swansea and Wimbledon, meanwhile.
The latter were 1-0 down to Ipswich at Plough Lane after only three minutes, but hit back to lead 2-1 through Omar Bugiel and Matty Stevens.
Can they hold on for a famous win?
Latest scores in remaining second-round ties
21:04
We’re well into the second halves of tonight’s seven remaining second-round ties in the Carabao Cup.
Wolves appear to be cruising into round three as they lead Burnley 2-0 at Molineux thanks to a brace from Portuguese winger Goncalo Guedes.
Joining them as it stands will be Newcastle, who needed just 18 seconds to take the lead at Nottingham Forest through Joe Willock.
Brentford lead at fourth-tier Colchester thanks to an effort from Keane Lewis-Potter, while a shock is on the cards in South Wales with Championship Swansea trailing Wycombe thanks to Richard Kone.
There are goals flying in all over the place at the moment, with Southampton now leading 3-2 at Cardiff and Premier League new boys Ipswich having fallen 2-1 behind away at League Two side AFC Wimbledon.
The only goalless game at present is at the London Stadium, where West Ham and Bournemouth remain locked in stalemate.
Any draws after 90 minutes will go straight to penalties remember, with no extra time in the Carabao Cup until the semi-final stage.
Pre-draw results and new process explained
20:51 , George Flood
As mentioned, Manchester City, Arsenal, holders Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United were all involved in a ‘pre-draw’ process earlier on this evening to determine who would be playing home or away in round three ahead of the main proceedings later on.
But rather than draw those teams specifically, they instead did it as the first four of those aforementioned clubs to be drawn being placed at home against a winner from round two.
The last two of those six clubs out of the hat, meanwhile, will be away in round three.
All a bit confusing and convoluted, I’m afraid.
Was there not an easier way?!

Carabao Cup third round draw live
20:36 , George Flood
Good evening and welcome to Standard Sport’s live coverage of the draw for the third round of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup.
The Premier League teams involved in European football this term all enter the competition at this stage, though last season’s top six are being kept apart in order to avoid a fixture pile-up following the seismic changes made to both the Champions League and Europa League this term.
All of those clubs were involved in a pre-draw process earlier on tonight to discover who would be playing home or away in round three... more on that in a moment.
There are 32 teams in total involved in tonight’s proceedings, with 18 second-round ties settled last night and a further seven currently ongoing this evening.
The draw - hosted by Mark Chapman - should be coming up at around 10:15pm BST, following the conclusion of the televised all-Premier League affair between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle at the City Ground.
Stay tuned for all the latest news, updates and the draw as it happens.
