Capitals Postgame: Alex Ovechkin Calls Tom Wilson 'The Hottest Player In The League' & Praises Offense; Wilson On What's Working

As Alex Ovechkin continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's greatest goal scorer of all time, the tallies are piling up for Tom Wilson, and he couldn't be happier for his Washington Capitals teammate.

Ovechkin took the time postgame to call out Wilson for his play so far, which included two goals and the overtime winner en route to a 6-5 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

"He's good, he get rewarded with what he's doing out there," Ovechkin told reporters in Newark. "You can see he's feeling it right now, hottest guy in the league. I'm happy for him."

Wilson has five goals in four games to open the season, good for third in the league behind only Nikita Kucherov (7) and Artemi Panarin (6). His four-game goal-scoring streak to open the season is a franchise record, tying Ovechkin, Mike Gartner and Dennis Maruk.

"Sometimes they're going in, and you just got to enjoy it," Wilson added. "It's a tough league to score goals, so it's a lot of good passes, good teammates... I'm always happy to help this team win."

Ovechkin also praised the offense, which has been a major difference-maker for Washington open the season. The Capitals were among the lowest-scoring teams in the league just a year ago, and now, they have managed at least three goals in each game so far to open the 2024-25 campaign.

For the 39-year-old captain, it's all about strategy and simplicity, and it's easy to see a difference in the way Washington is generating pressure.

"We control the puck well, we don't make lots of turnovers, we generate shots on net and we moving the puck well in the offensive zone," Ovechkin added.
