Capitals, Gaming Communities Rally Around Longtime PA Announcer Wes Johnson After Medical Emergency; Over $100,000 Raised

The Washington Capitals and gaming community has rallied around Wes Johnson, the team's longtime PA announcer and voice actor known for his work in locally-based Bethesda Games video game titles such as Elder Scrolls and Fallout, after suffering a medical emergency that has him fighting for his life in the intensive care unit.

According to the GoFundMe page for Johnson, the personality volunteered to host a National Alzheimer's Foundation benefit event in Atlanta, and after getting there, did not make it to the event.

His wife, Kim, tried to get in touch with him but was unable to reach him, and after contacting hotel security, Johnson was found in his hotel room "unconscious and barely alive" as "EMT crews struggled to find a pulse."

Johnson remains in the ICU at this time, and all the while, his family, friends and the Capitals organization have been doing what they can to support him.

Washington released a statement, first run by his family, in support of Johnson and promoted his GoFundMe, while team owner Ted Leonsis also donated $25,000.

"The Washington Capitals express our heartfelt thoughts and send our best wishes to our beloved public address announcer, Wes Johnson, as he faces a significant medical emergency," the team wrote in a statement that was approved by the family. "We kindly ask everyone to keep Wes in your thoughts and to respect the family's privacy as they navigate this challenging time and focus on Wes' well-being."

So far, over $100,000 and counting has been raised for the trademark in-area voice of the team, who has been at the helm for 25 years and is known for his enthusiasm and trademark voice that announces goals and penalties.
