Fabio Capello believes that there is a secret behind AC Milan’s improved performances in the last couple of games against Inter and Lecce, which yielded two wins.

Following the derby win against Inter, the pressure was on Milan to build some momentum and continue their positive form on Friday night versus Lecce. Thanks to three goals in five minutes, they managed to do so and actually went top of the league for a brief period.

The result is that Paulo Fonseca has gone from seemingly being on the verge of being sacked by Milan to having recorded two big wins that have cemented his place. Seven days have made a big difference, even if the Bayer Leverkusen game on Tuesday night will be an even tougher test.

Capello spoke about Milan during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport and in particular he gave his thoughts behind the recent upturn in performance levels.

“Milan also took home an important match against Lecce, because confirming themselves after the derby show was fundamental,” he began.

“One of the secrets of this mini positive series in my opinion is in the movements of Tammy Abraham and Alvaro Morata. Both are very mobile players who help the midfielders and open up spaces. Morata in particular does this job very well: he often drops back without losing clarity in the goal area.

“Milan and Inter (with Frattesi in place of Barella) played with their starters. Rightly so: first you get the points and then you think about the rotation. The season has just begun, the pace is high and the players are not tired.

“When we get to February or March then we can think about making a reasoned turnover. In the meantime, let’s enjoy this championship: the balance makes it even more interesting.”
