Canucks World Juniors Throwback 4: USA
The 2025 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships are fast approaching, with exhibition matches already underway. December 26 marks the first day of the tournament itself, and games will be played nearly every day until the gold medal game on January 5. To get into the World Juniors spirit, let’s take a look at some recent performances from Canucks prospects sorted by country. Here are some highlights from the past few years of Team USA.
2019: Quinn Hughes and Tyler Madden

Quinn Hughes played in his last World Junior Championship in front of a Vancouver crowd that already knew he was part of their system. He was named an alternate captain of Team USA, and put up two assists in the team’s seven-game campaign to win silver. He was joined by former Canucks prospect Tyler Madden, who was taken in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft. In this tournament, Madden tallied three goals and one assist.
2018: Quinn Hughes and Will Lockwood
Hughes’ first World Juniors saw him collect three assists in seven games. Also on Team USA’s roster was former Canucks prospect Will Lockwood, who was drafted 64th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. He played three games in the team’s bronze medal-winning tournament.

2016: Brock Boeser
Brock Boeser only played in one World Junior Championship, after being drafted 23rd overall in 2015, but put up a goal and two assists in that tournament. He and the rest of Team USA won bronze after an 8–3 victory against Sweden.
2015: Thatcher Demko
Thatcher Demko was a force in the 2015 World Juniors, posting a .937 SV% that was third only to Zach Fucale and Igor Shesterkin. His 1.74 GAA and seven total goals allowed were second-best in the entire tournament. Despite this, Team USA was eliminated in the quarterfinals in a 3–2 loss to Russia.
2013: J.T. Miller (New York Rangers)
J.T. Miller was an alternate captain for Team USA in the 2013 World Juniors. He put up two goals and seven assists in seven games, leading his team in helpers. He and Team USA captured gold in a 3–1 victory against Sweden.
2012: Derek Forbort (L.A. Kings) and J.T. Miller (New York Rangers)
Two current Canucks competed in the 2012 World Juniors. Derek Forbort, a product of the L.A. Kings at the time, grabbed two assists in six games. Miller had two goals and two assists in the same span. Despite both players’ efforts, Team USA placed seventh in the tournament.
2011: Derek Forbort (L.A. Kings)
Forbort’s first World Junior Championship saw him play in all six games, though he didn’t register any points. He did, however, help his team along to a bronze medal, which they earned in a 4–2 win against Sweden.
