Canucks' Tyler Myers Suspended For Three Games

After a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety, Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers was assessed a three-game suspension for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard on Saturday night. He was given a match penalty as a result alongside Oilers captain Connor McDavid, who was also suspended for three games.

With seconds left in the third period of Saturday night's game, a toss-up between McDavid and Conor Garland resulted in the Oilers star being tossed from the game. At the same time, closer to the boards, Bouchard raised his arms as if preparing to hit Myers. The tall defenceman retaliated with a cross-check that hit Bouchard in the face. Some are referring to McDavid's crosscheck as "self defence." As for Myers, the play seemed to come unprompted, leading fans to question why he did it.

"Things were getting heated there at the end," he explained on Monday. "I never intended to hit him in the face. I've never cross-checked anyone in the face in my whole career."

Myers also elaborated that he didn't think Bouchard "had much intent" to skate into the cross-check, saying that the play was "probably a little aggressive."

This is Myers' first suspension since 2014, when he hit New Jersey Devils forward Dainius Zubrus in the head. Prior to that, he was also suspended for boarding Scott Gomez of the Montréal Canadiens. Both suspensions lasted three games.
