Canucks Prospect Not Registered By Canada To Start 2025 World Juniors

Despite being named to Team Canada's roster, Vancouver Canucks defensive prospect Sawyer Mynio was not registered by the team ahead of their first game at the 2025 World Juniors. While each team can carry 25 players, Canada has elected to register 22, leaving three players off the official roster. Outside of Mynio, the other two players not registered are Seattle Kraken forward prospect Carson Rehkopf and Philadelphia Flyers goaltending prospect Carson Bjarnason.

Mynio can still play in the tournament even though he was not registered before Canada's first game. According to a report by Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects, Canada plans to register the three players if injuries occur during the tournament. While the tournament is short, injuries are not out of the ordinary, as teams play four games in six days during the preliminary round.

This season, Mynio has 18 points in 19 games at the WHL level. The 2023 third-round pick was named co-captain of the Seattle Thunderbirds earlier this year, sharing the duties with 2025 NHL Draft prospect Braeden Cootes. In 196 career WHL games, Mynio has scored 30 goals and recorded 114 points.

Mynio is one of three Canucks defensive prospects at the 2025 World Juniors. The other two are Tom Willander, who represents Sweden and Basile Sansonnens, who plays for Switzerland. Canada kicks off their tournament on Boxing Day at 4:30 pm PT against Finland. All games, including the Gold Medal Game, can be viewed on TSN.
