Canucks, Maple Leafs use third period to fight, and fight some more (Video)

The Toronto Maple Leafs doubled up the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night 6-3, and the game devolved into some ugliness in the third period.

The hit that sparked things and may get some extra attention from the NHL Department of Player Safety was Nazem Kadri’s blindside blow on Daniel Sedin.

Kadri was given five for fighting and a charging major. Jannik Hansen, who took a big hit from Morgan Rielly moments before, was ejected with an instigator.

An unnecessary hit, for sure; but is it a suspendable one? Blindside hits aren’t always worthy of discipline. The key here is if the DoPS feels that Sedin’s head was the principle point of contact, which those Sportsnet replays don’t definitively show. (Did Kadri make contact with Sedin’s arm first?)

Kadri is a repeat offender, having last been suspended in April for four games. Sedin would return to finish the game.

Since the game began to devolve into a mess, obviously Alex Burrows did something.

Next up, we had a tilt between Derek Dorsett and Leo Komarov, followed by Dorsett losing it toward the Leafs bench while leaving the ice.

To top it all off, there was a bit of a line brawl that teased us with a possible goalie fight between Ryan Miller and Frederik Andersen. Miller jumped into a fray between Matt Martin and Troy Stecher, which prompted a yard sale on the ice and the Maple Leafs netminder to skate down and check things out. Sadly, no goalie gloves were dropped.

Both Miller and Andersen were thrown out as the penalty summary kept expanding.

Finally, the night ended with a threat.

The two teams meet again on Dec. 3.
