Which Canucks Would Make This Year’s Hypothetical All-Star Game?

With the 4 Nations Faceoff being held from February 12 to 20, fans will be without NHL All-Star weekend for the first time since the event’s cancellation in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Vancouver Canucks have a representative on each of the four nations’ rosters — Kevin Lankinen on Team Finland, Elias Pettersson on Team Sweden, Quinn Hughes and J.T. Miller on Team USA, and Head Coach Rick Tocchet on Team Canada. Last year, they sent six players and Tocchet to Toronto for All-Star weekend, but it’s unlikely this would happen if there was one this year. With that being said, here’s a look at whether some of Vancouver’s stars would make the hypothetical 2025 All-Star Game.

Brock Boeser

Brock Boeser has played in two NHL All-Star Games, but it was in his first one when he made a splash. After winning the accuracy shooting event during the 2018 skills competition, he was named the tournament’s MVP after putting up a goal and an assist in the finals against the Atlantic division. This season, he has scored 15 goals and 14 assists despite missing seven games due to an upper-body injury. While he hasn’t quite found his scoring form from last season, he’s still second on the team in goals. Competition in the NHL is tough, however, so it’s unlikely that Boeser would make it over other players in the Pacific Division.

Elias Pettersson

Of all the players on this list, Pettersson has been present at the most All-Star weekends — he played in 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024. In last year’s skills competition, he won the passing event by collecting 25 points in 45 seconds. However, what may be his most notable moment at All-Star weekend is when he won the hardest shot event in 2023 with a recorded shot of 103.2 mph. With 11 goals and 19 assists in 40 games played this season, Pettersson hasn’t quite performed to the level that many fans know he is capable of. For that reason, it’s reasonable to believe that he wouldn’t make a hypothetical 2025 Pacific Division All-Star roster.

J.T. Miller

One of the Canucks’ most consistent players throughout his tenure, Miller has only been named to one All-Star Game in his entire NHL career — last season’s. He did so off a 20-goal, 41-assist campaign in 45 games played at the time. Alongside Hughes, he was named to the newly-formatted All-Star skills competition after being voted in by the fans. This year, he has put up eight goals and 24 assists in 36 games. While he’s arguably the forward most poised to take a spot for this year’s hypothetical All-Star Game, with the rule assigning one player per team to each division’s roster, it’s probable that Miller would get bumped in favour of another forward.

Kevin Lankinen

Lankinen is the only player on this list who hasn’t taken part in an NHL All-Star Game. Despite this, he won’t be resting during the February break as he’ll be joining Team Finland in Montréal and Boston. The Canucks goaltender is on track to have a career season with Vancouver despite only joining the team in September. He has started 29 of the Canucks’ 46 games this season, posting 16 wins, a career-low 2.63 GAA, and four shutouts. Lankinen has been one of the better goalies in the Pacific Division this season, so there would arguably be a higher chance of him being named an All-Star over any other defencemen or forwards.

Quinn Hughes

Without a doubt, Hughes would be named to the Pacific division All-Star team for 2025. His 12 goals and 39 assists lead the Canucks in scoring, with the team’s second-highest being Miller’s 32 points in 36 games played. If he continues at this pace, Hughes will be only a hair away from hitting 100 points on the season. He has been doing all of this while securing his team’s blueline, averaging a near career-high of 25:22 per game. Since entering the NHL in the 2019–20 regular season, Hughes has been named to two All-Star Games, missing out on the 2022 and 2023 weekends due to outstanding performances by Thatcher Demko and Elias Pettersson respectively.
