How The Canucks Have Historically Performed Post-Christmas Break

After spending Christmas with their loved ones, the Vancouver Canucks will resume play against the Seattle Kraken on December 28 at 1 p.m. With turmoil and tension surrounding the team due to a variety of factors such as their lacklustre 7–7–5 home record, fans are hoping that the break has helped the team reset.

Historically speaking, after Christmas, the day that the Canucks have played most on is December 26. They’ve played on this day 25 times, with their record on the 26th being 10–13–2 (ties are counted as the final value, as some records still counted ties at the time). Their first ever game after Christmas ended in a 4–2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in their inaugural season. Their first win on the 26th came the year after in a 6–2 victory against the California Golden Seals.

Vancouver has a 7–5–2 record on December 27. The first time they played on the 27th as their first game back from Christmas, they were defeated 4–2 by the St. Louis Blues. They carried a four-game losing streak when resuming play on the 27th until they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4–2 in 1986. Their most recent first post-Christmas game on the 27th was in 2022, when they beat the San Jose Sharks 6–2.

After Saturday’s game against the Kraken, the Canucks will add another game to their 3–4–1 record on December 28. Their first post-Christmas game on the 28th wasn’t until 1978, in which they tied their expansion-brother Buffalo Sabres 3–3. Surprisingly, their first win with the 28th as their first game after the Christmas break came in 2016, when they beat the L.A. Kings 2–1.

The Canucks have only played two games in which December 29 was their first game back from Christmas, though they won both. The first took place in 2013, when they shut out the Calgary Flames 2–0. Their next game was against the Anaheim Ducks, who they beat 2–1 in 2021.

Vancouver’s most consistent opponent post-Christmas has been the Kings, who they’ve faced off against a total of 10 times. Only a game short of L.A. are the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers, who the Canucks have played nine and eight times after Christmas respectively.
