Canucks Gameday Preview #13: A Rivalry Renewed Against The Oilers

Just a few months removed from their epic seven-game playoff series, the Vancouver Canucks (7-2-3) and the Edmonton Oilers (6-7-1) battle for the first time during the 2024-25 season. Last season, the Oilers got the last laugh, defeating the Canucks in Game 7 of the second round, which propelled them to an appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. A win for Vancouver would extend their winning streak to four, while a loss would help snap Edmonton's current two-game losing streak.

Top Canucks Prospect Should Get Recalled If Brock Boeser Misses Time

The Canucks will be given a great opportunity in this game as they are facing a historically bad penalty kill. The Oilers have a 59.5% kill percentage through 14 games, which is on pace for one of the worst in NHL history. If Vancouver's power play can get going, it could play a significant role in this game.

Players to Watch:

Conor Garland:

Conor Garland has been Mr. Everything for the Canucks this season. He has 11 points in 12 games and played a season-high 22:43 in Vancouver's last game against the L.A. Kings. With Brock Boeser out of the lineup, Garland will be leaned upon heavily in this game.

Jeff Skinner:

It has been a tough start for Jeff Skinner, who has just three goals and six points through his first 14 games. The former Calder Trophy winner is averaging 14:34 this season but has recorded three shots in each of his last two games. An always dangerous goal scorer, the Canucks will need to keep an eye on Skinner whenever he is on the ice.
