Canucks deal defenceman Travis Hamonic to Senators
The Ottawa Senators have acquired defenceman Travis Hamonic from the Vancouver Canucks for a 2022 third-round pick.
Hamonic has appeared in only 24 games for the Canucks this season, registering seven points and six penalty minutes.
The St. Malo, Manitoba native is in the first year of a two-year, $6-million deal, carrying a cap hit of $3 million. No salary was retained by Vancouver in the deal.
The pick that Vancouver is receiving in exchange for the 31-year-old is the same third-round pick they originally traded to Vegas in exchange for Nate Schmidt in October 2020. The Golden Knights then traded the pick to the Senators in the Evgeny Dadonov deal last offseason.
Hamonic’s departure from Vancouver not only offers some cap relief for general manager Patrick Alvin, but also helps free up a congested right side of the Canucks’ blue line.

Initial reactions from the hockey world pointed to a win for Vancouver, and another head-scratching move from Ottawa’s front office. The team has a record of 22-35-5, second-last in the Atlantic Division.
The Hamonic trade might be the best deal the #Canucks have made in a decade. To offload $3 million for a bottom pair defenceman while also adding a 3rd rounder is basically wizardry in today’s NHL.
