Canucks Captain On Pace To Become Eighth Skater In Franchise History To Hit 100 Points In A Season
It is safe to say that there has never been a player in Vancouver Canucks history like Quinn Hughes. The Canucks new all-time leader in assists by a defenceman has only played 388 regular season games but is already considered one of the greatest players in franchise history. With a potential second straight Norris Trophy upcoming at the end of the season, Hughes could also make history, becoming the eighth player in franchise history to record 100 points in a season.

Vancouver's list of 100-point players is small but features some very recognizable names. The other seven players include Hall of Famers Pavel Bure (twice), Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedins, as well as Alexander Mogilny, Markus Näslund, J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. While Hughes did come close with 92 points last season, his pace through 23 games has him in line to join this elite group.
Hitting 100 points in a season is a difficult task for forwards but almost unheard of for defensemen. Since Hughes was born in 1999, the only defenceman to hit 100 points in a season was Erik Karlsson in 2022-23. Even the 90-point club is an elusive one, as Roman Josi, Cale Makar, and Hughes are the only other three to hit that mark in the last 25 years. Despite some high point totals over the past two and a half decades, the fact that only one defender has reached the century mark shows just how difficult it is to achieve the feat.

The question now is, what does Hughes need to do to hit the 100-point mark? With 28 points through 23 games, Hughes needs 72 points over his 59 games, or an average of 1.22 points per game, to hit the century mark. While this is not impossible, it would mean Hughes needs to produce the exact same amount of points for the rest of the year to hit 100 on the dot. As mentioned, it is not an impossible task, but it would even be a challenge for some of the best forwards in the NHL to keep up that level of production for the rest of the season.
While a 100-point season is a daunting task, it is hard to bet against Hughes hitting the mark. He continues to evolve his game and may even be better than last season when he took home his first Norris Trophy. Already one of the best players currently in the NHL, the 2024-25 season is lining up to be a historic one for the Canucks captain.
