Canucks Boeser, Pettersson team up for a Sedins-style goal
If you were watching the Vancouver Canucks battle the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night and thought Daniel and Henrik Sedin were still playing for the ‘Nucks, I wouldn’t blame you.
Similar thoughts crossed my mind when current members of the team, Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson, teamed up to score this Sedins-style goal early in the second period.
First of all, what a pass by Pettersson. I know it is extremely early in the season, but this guy has to be the front-runner for the Calder Trophy at this point. He must be a billiards wizard because that bank pass could not have been placed any more perfectly for Boeser.
But what makes this play even more ridiculous is the fact that the Sedin twins literally pulled off the exact same goal during the 2012-13 NHL campaign.
Now, I’m aware that Boeser used his shot to get it past Philipp Grubauer, unlike Daniel Sedin who opted for the deke. However, the fact that the pair of young Canucks were able to essentially replicate one of the greatest plays the Sedins made is utterly amazing.
Pettersson also pulled off quite the impressive feat by scoring late in the second period of the contest. The Swede became the first centre since 1988-89 to score eight goals through the first nine games of their NHL career, according to Sportsnet Stats. Who did he match with that record? Former Avalanche legend Joe Sakic (however, he was playing for the Quebec Nordiques when he set this mark).
Boeser finished the game with two goals and four points, while Pettersson racked up two goals and five points as the Canucks defeated the Avalanche 7-6 in overtime.
It will be nearly impossible to replace the contributions of the Sedin twins in Vancouver, but Boeser and Pettersson are showing a lot of promise early on in their careers.
