Canes added third commitment this week. Here’s the latest recruit to pledge to ‘The U’

The Miami Hurricanes’ torrid recruiting roll continued on Thursday when UM picked up a commitment from Jacksonville-based Class of 2025 prospect Hylton Stubbs, a ball-hawking safety who had a part in 11 takeaways last season.

The Mandarin High senior-to-be picked UM over UF. He committed to Southern California in March, before taking a campus visit there, but de-committed recently. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Penn State were among many other schools that offered him.

Stubbs instantly becomes UM’s highest-rated recruit in ESPN’s rankings, which places him 93rd among all 2025 prospects.

247 Sports rates Stubbs the No. 6 safety and No. 56 player overall in the 2025 class.

On3.com rates him the No. 5 safety and No. 56 player in the class, as well as the seventh best prospect in Florida.

Last season, Stubbs helped Mandarin reach the state title game. He had 97 tackles, including 8.5 per loss, with six interceptions, six pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and 2.5 sacks.

He had two interceptions playing for Oakleaf High in 2022.

247 Sports recruiting director Andrew Ivins said Stubbs is a “well-rounded safety prospect that can defend the pass and the run. Added some good mass between junior and senior seasons and doesn’t appear to be done maturing. Has experience working in a variety of different alignments and can likely do the same at the next level as he’s a spirited competitor in the box and alert in coverage.

“Strikes people as a tackler...Tracks the football well on the backend and has the ball skills to come down with takeaways.... Projects as a potential multi-year impact defender at the Power Four level that can add value in a variety of different ways as he can match tight ends, cut down run lanes, and get home on the blitz. Likely to find most success in an aggressive scheme that wants to move him around and put him in position to make plays. NFL upside with his physicality.”

Stubbs becomes UM’s 16th Class of 2025 commitment, with nine of those coming since June 1. The Canes’ class entered Thursday ranked 14th nationally by 247 Sports.

Stubbs is also the third player to commit to the Hurricanes this week, joining Class of 2025 four-star linebacker Gavin Nix and Class of 2026 four-star quarterback Dereon Coleman.
