Canadiens: The Xhekaj Brothers Kept Their Word
The Montreal Canadiens had a rough night Saturday, first, they suffered a 3-1 loss ato the Pittsburgh Penguins and then, they were unable to fly back home because of a plane issue. As a result, the team only landed on the south shore of Montreal at 12:30 Sunday afternoon.
The players had a day off today and blueliner Arber Xhekaj and his brother Florian had made a previous commitment to attend a public signing session in Mascouche on the north shore at 14:00.
Some might have decided they didn't fancy the crazy race across the highland to meet fans and sign various item after just landing back, but not the rearguard. The brothers are clearly men of their word and they showed up on time, ready to make numerous' people's day.
There was a big queue to meet the players, fans of all ages but all of the same allegiance, Canadiens fans with a soft spot for the brothers. Some wanted to have game-used items such as sticks, jerseys, or helmets signed while others carried books, pictures or pucks.
Jeremie Monat who had a couple of game used sticks to get signed by the Canadiens' rugged defender was glad the event was not cancelled:
I was a bit worried it would be postponed with the plane issue, but I'm really glad to be here today. I wish Arber played more often, but we don't get to decide that. I'd scratch Barron instead.
For others, it was an opportunity for some father and son quality time. It wasn't the first time Gabriel Beaulieu and his son Jay met the older Xhekaj, but it was a great opportunity for them to get a game-used helmet signed by the eldest Xhekaj and a game-used stick signed by the youngest.

Asked why he likes the Xhekaj brothers, young Jay replied: "Because they are fighters". The youngster plays hockey as well, but can't play like his favourite players yet. Father Gabriel explained:
He just went from being a goaltender to a skater as well, but we told him, "Jay it's fine, you want to play, you're intense like your two favourite players, but you'll have to dial it down a little".
While the Xhekaj brothers' style of play on the ice cannot be emulated by those playing minor hockey, their dedication both on and off the ice should be commended and really is an example to follow.
Yesterday, Memorable Authentic also announced they would be hosting Lane Hutson on Sunday, Nov. 24 for their next public signing session. Tickets for the event will be on sale Tuesday night at 7:00 PM ET on their website.
As for the Xhekaj, Arber will be back in action when the Canadiens host the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night and Florian will be back in action with the Laval Rocket in Belleville on Friday night when they'll take on the Ottawa Senators' affiliate.
