Canadiens: P.K. Subban Hops on the Lane Hutson Train

It would appear that former Habs star P.K. Subban is a massive fan of Canadiens defensive prospect Lane Hutson. It’s no surprise given that both players showcased elite evasiveness and two-way capabilities in their respective eras.

In two posts that were uploaded both on Subban’s X and Instagram accounts, the ESPN analyst shared a video of Hutson completing a drill wherein he receives passes from the hash marks, maneuvers around opposing players and fires the puck by the goaltender. The caption on both posts reads “CAN’T PUT REINS ON THE LANE TRAIN.”

Subban is one of many hockey enthusiasts online eagerly awaiting Hutson’s participation in a full NHL season. The American was a remarkable talent in the United States National Team Development Program, appearing in 109 games and amassing 90 points on both the U17 and U18 teams.

The stats he put up had him selected 62nd overall in 2022 by Montreal. He then played for the Boston University Terrier’s men’s hockey team. In two seasons of NCAA competition, Hutson put up 15-33-48 and 15-24-49 campaigns, the latter being as an alternate captain. He also had 10 points in two stints for the USA World Junior Championships U20 teams.

Hutson signed his ELC and played in two games at the end of the 2023-24 calendar year. He had two assists but dazzled the Saint-Flanelle faithful, showcasing that very evasiveness in the offensive zone he was touted for having. He will be gunning for an opening-day roster spot, and his skill will likely grant him that role. He is one of many Canadiens prospects on the cusp of finding significant ice time in the big leagues next season.
