Canadiens: Hutson Named December Rookie Of The Month

Montreal Canadiens rookie defenseman Lane Hutson was named the Rookie of the Month for the first time this season. In December, the young blueliner scored two goals and picked up 11 assists for 13 points.

It was in mid December that Hutson finally found the back of the net for the first time against the Winnipeg Jets' standout goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. The arrival of Patrik Laine and the move to the first wave of the power play were no stranger to his increased offensive production.

In 37 games so far this season, the rearguard has put up 26 points and sits in third place amongst rookies. Matvei Michkov has the lead with 29 points. Hutson is first amongst rookie blueliners however, his nearest rival is Chicago Blackhaws Nolan Allan who has played 31 games and put up a modest six points.

There is very little doubt that Hutson will be in the Calder Trophy conversation, he's taken Montreal by storm and shows no sign of slowing down whatsoever. It will be interesting to see if he'll be able to keep it going for 82 games however, he's not used to playing that many games.

His two most busy seasons were in the NCAA where he played 39 and 38 games in his two seasons, so it's possible he'll hit the proverbial wall so many rookie come across. Whatever happens however, he's sure to keep entertaining the Montreal fans.
