Barré-Boulet signed with the Canadiens on the opening day of free agency, inking a one-year deal worth $775,000. Born in Montmagny, Que, he stated that one of the reasons for signing with Montreal was the close proximity between the AHL and NHL teams, making it easier for him to commute and spend more time with his young kids, expecting to share time between the Rocket and Habs.

While a part of the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, where he spent the past four seasons—besides a two-game stint with the Seattle Kraken—he wore number 12. He now shares the number 27 with former Canadiens, including Alex Kovalev, Frank Mahovlich and Rick Chartraw.
Barré-Boulet has a fair chance at making the opening day roster for the Habs among the bottom-six forwards, given that Rafael Harvey-Pinard is spending the first few months of the season on the injured reserve list while recovering from surgery to help repair a broken leg. He has amassed 12 goals and 18 points in 68 NHL games.
