Canadian athletes' top 20 tweets from the 2018 Olympic Games

The Olympic Games feature the biggest moments in many athletes’ lives. They’ve trained extremely hard for four years or longer and now they’ve earned their spot on the world stage, and they take that very seriously. And although we saw the game-faces of all the Canadian athletes on competition days, we saw their goofier sides on social media.

Along with racking up 29 medals — the most in Canadian Winter Olympic history — and showing their dominance in competitions, it turns out Canadian athletes are pretty funny, as well.

Here are the top 20 athletes’ tweets from the Games.

  1. Charles Hamelin is one of Canada’s greatest speedskaters of all time. He’s won three gold, one silver and one bronze medals over four Olympic Games. And in PyeongChang, Hamelin took some time to sit back, relax, and snap this super-staged-but-super-cute photo of the bronze medal winning team — and yes, they look like they could definitely rival the Backstreet Boys.

2. Ski jumper Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes was unofficially awarded the title of Canada’s funniest athlete at the Games with tweet after tweet commenting on the most random during the competition. This is just one of many.

3. The 29-year-old bobsleigh athlete, Alysia Rissling, took to Twitter to acknowledge her bad mood during an interview after the Feb. 18 official training runs in PyeongChang … but hey, at least they thought she was kidding.

4. Maybe it runs in the sport: another bobsleigh athlete was making everyone on Twitter smile. This time, three-time Olympian Jesse Lumsden posted the best GIF ever on race day (also, shout out to the guy in the suit who made this video possible, whoever you are).

5. Canada’s women’s hockey team is taking home the silver medal, and goalkeeper Shannon Szabados is taking home the honour of (one of the) funniest tweets from the team. Rapper Chamillionaire should definitely hook her up with some concert tickets or something when she’s back in Canada: look at her rollin’!

6. After Drake took to Instagram to show some love to Canada’s Sarah Nurse after her first Olympic goal (which helped Canada beat USA in the preliminary round), her teammates got in on the action and quoted every Drake song imaginable to show their support to the Hamilton-native as well because, well, that’s pretty darn cool.

7. Freestyle skier Evan McEachran finished sixth in the slopestyle event on Feb. 18. Two days before competition, he let the Twitter-world in on his secret to preparing for the big competition.

8. Less than a year after a horrific crash that fractured his jaw, left arm, and he suffered rib fractures, a collapsed left lung, pelvis fracture, and ruptured his spleen, Mark McMorris was an underdog athlete that Canada was cheering for from the start. After winning the bronze medal in slopestyle snowboarding, he was feeling very blessed, and who could blame him? This was one powerful tweet.

9. Inspired by the stick tap (the traditional sign of respect, admiration and sportsmanship shown by hockey players) the Canadian Tire ad demonstrated the support of all Canadians by joining them in tapping for our athletes. Curling gold medallists Katelyn Lawes and John Morris got in on the action and tapped back to their fans back home. So sweet.

10. This doesn’t even need an explanation — it’s just really sweet. Olympic love!

Canadian athletes weren’t just busy winning medals in PyeongChang, they were busy tweeting comedic gold too.

11. This may need a bit more of an explanation. But then again, maybe not.

Let’s just sit back and watch these figure skaters from three different countries strike a pose. Someone contact Vogue.

12. If you were watching the Olympic Games and feeling bad for maybe not knowing a tonne about certain sports, or not recognizing some of the athletes, don’t feel bad. Canadian figure skater Meagan Duhamel’s mom is in the same boat.

13. This rendition of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” sang/yelled by Team Canada is top three of all time.

14. Snowboarder Calynn Irwin was prettyyyyy pumped when Canada broke the record for all-time medal haul at a Winter Olympic Games.

15. Reactions from figure skating legend Scott Moir yelling at the referees at the women’s hockey game with a beer in his hand went viral. His reaction, along with the reaction of of his skating partner Tessa Virtue were hilarious.

We’re with you, Scott; everyone is Canada felt the same way.

16. Turns out the Mikael Kingsbury, King of Moguls, is a big Lord of the Rings fan. Can we now call him the Lord of the Moguls?

Ok, maybe not.

17. Both Sam Edney and Jesse Lumsden defended figure skater Scott Moir’s response to a reporter asking about his and Tessa’s relationship status for the 1000000000000th time.

18. No, no… it’s not just you Calynn. Canada was HOT!

19. The Arkells performed live at the Canada House on Feb. 24, four days after this tweet. Wonder if she ever got her time in the spotlight?

20. If this is Jesse Lumden’s rule, I guess this must be right. It’s Sunday today, so bobsleigh it is.
