Canada disqualified from Davis Cup after Shapovalov drills umpire in face
Canadian teen Denis Shapovalov let his emotions get the best of him Sunday, and it cost his nation dearly.
The 17-year-old accidentally drilled the umpire in the face with the ball after losing a point to Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund, resulting in a default loss for Canada in the rubber match of the Davis Cup tie.
Shapovalov, who resides in Richmond Hill, Ont., dropped the first two sets of the match 6-3, 6-4, and was trailing 2-1 before his colossal meltdown.
Shapovalov was visibly apologetic after watching the ball drill the umpire in the left eye.
Despite the costly mishap, Shapovalov had the support of his teammate, Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil, who beat Daniel Evans earlier Sunday to help Canada even up the series ahead of Sunday’s rubber match.
No one is nicer or carries themselves better for a 17 y/o than Shapovalov. Everyone can see that today was an accident. Can happen to anyone
