Cam Ward the first Hurricanes QB with 30 TD passes in a season. The numbers behind the feat

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward (1) reacts on the sideline during the second half of an ACC football game against the Duke Blue Devils at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Cam Ward stands alone as the Miami Hurricanes’ single-season touchdown passes leader.

Ward’s 74-yard touchdown to Elijah in the first quarter against Georgia Tech on Saturday was his 30th of the season, breaking a tie with Steve Walsh’s mark from the 1988 season for the most in a single season in Hurricanes history.

And Ward hit the milestone it in the opening moments of his 10th game. Walsh played in 11 games for Miami the year he threw for 29 touchdowns.

Here is a quick by-the-numbers breakdown of Ward’s 30 touchdown passes this season.

7: Ward has thrown touchdown passes to seven different receivers this season. Interestingly enough, every one of those receivers has caught at least two touchdowns from him. The seven: Xavier Restrepo (nine), Jacolby George (five), Elijah Arroyo (five), Isaiah Horton (four), Cam McCormick (three), Sam Brown (two) and Chris Johnson Jr. (two).

24.8: On average, Ward’s passing touchdown plays this season have averaged 24.8 yards. His longest is 76 yards to Brown during Miami’s win over USF. His shortest was his 1-yard go-ahead touchdown to Horton against Virginia Tech.

Four have been over 50 yards — the Brown touchdown, a pair of touchdowns to Restrepo (one against Florida A&M, another against Duke) and the Arroyo touchdown that broke the school record — and only 11 have been for fewer than 10 yards.

11: Eleven of Ward’s touchdown passes have come in the first quarter. He has also thrown seven apiece in the second and fourth quarters along with five in the third quarter.

3: According to Pro Football Focus, three of Ward’s touchdown passes have come when he was flushed out of the pocket.

More Cam Ward milestones on the horizon

Ward entered Saturday having completed 216 of 322 pass attempts for 3,146 passing yards on the season. That’s 47 completions and 497 yards shy of breaking Bernie Kosar’s single-season school records set in the 1984 season (262 completions, 3,642 passing yards).

His 67.1-percent completion rate entering the Georgia Tech game is also on pace to break the school’s single-season record, which is currently 65.8 percent by Tyler Van Dyke in the 2023 season.
