Bill Peters, NHL likely to have in-person meeting over abuse allegations

After allegations of racist remarks and physical abuse came to light via former NHLers Akim Aliu and Michal Jordan, current Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters has been under fire.

Due to these allegations, Peters might not just lose his job behind the Flames’ bench, but could possibly be punished by the NHL directly, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet suggests.

A face-to-face meeting is likely to happen and the league will play a massive role in handling this situation, not just the team that employs the embattled coach.

According to the NHL Constitution, as Friedman mentions, the league has the power to expel or suspend Peters for a definite or indefinite period if he is found guilty of any “conduct detrimental to the League or the game of hockey.”

With this going to the league, rather than just the Flames dealing with the situation, there is now the possibility of a fine up to $1 million and an official termination of employment.

According to Friedman, there appears to be several hoops that this process has to jump through. Since Peters was under a different contract and in a different league during the alleged interaction with Aliu, it could result in a mess.

Initially, this was seen as an internal situation for the Flames, according to general manager Brad Treliving. But as the days have passed and the conversation continues to grow — former NHLer Daniel Carcillo has since stepped up as a whistleblower on the abuse prevalent throughout hockey culture — the Peters issue has come to the league.

The current Flames bench boss has six seasons of experience as an NHL head coach and has been coaching at a major level since 1996.
