Caleb Williams doesn't anticipate having say in Bears coaching search
The future and development of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams is essential to the Chicago Bears franchise and any success they hope to have in the foreseeable future. In a season where the team has underwhelmed and disappointed in meeting expectations, Williams has played relatively well and put up a rookie season to remember in the history of the franchise.
Through the first 16 games of his career, Williams is the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 3,300 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, six or less interceptions, while rushing for at least 450 yards as well. He also set the rookie passing yards and touchdowns record in team history. All of that happened while Williams became the most-sacked quarterback in franchise history for a single season, and seeing him go through two head coaches and three offensive coordinators.
Speaking to the media ahead of the Bears' season finale against the Green Bay Packers, Williams was asked about the team's search for their next head coach, and said he doesn't anticipate having a say in the final decision. He'll "just hope and believe, have faith in the guys upstairs that they make the right decisions." But he would be open to being involved if the Bears approach him about it.
Most conversations surrounding the search for the Bears' next head coach has been around the development and future for Williams. It would make the most sense for the organization to make sure that their prized young quarterback and next head coach are in alignment. Players on the team have been open in their desire to have the next head coach come in and change the culture of the locker room, while also recognizing the need to continue to focus on the growth of Williams and his career.
The 2024 season has been a major disappointment for the Bears franchise and, despite his individual success, there is plenty of room for Williams to grow. His two most important areas of concern should be the amount of sacks he puts himself in position to take and winning games. A good head coach will come in and address those, along with any other areas of concern, so it would be seem only right that Williams and his next coach are on the same page.
