Caitlin Clark believes Kansas City would be a perfect place for a WNBA team
Basketball star Caitlin Clark is bullish on Kansas City.
The WNBA will be expanding to 15 teams by 2026 with franchises coming to Toronto, Portland and Golden State. League commissioner Cathy Engelbert wants a 16th team by 2028, and Kansas City has stated its desire to have a WNBA franchise to play at the T-Mobile Center.
“You think about the KC Current, the Big 12 women’s basketball tournament,” Kathy Nelson, president and CEO of the KC Sports Commission and VisitKC, said in October. “Women’s sports are on the rise, and so is Kansas City.”
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also has stated his desire to have the WNBA play in Kansas City.
The Current’s ownership group, which includes Patrick and Brittany Mahomes along with Angie and Chris Long, reportedly have met with the WNBA.
“It’s kind of a no-brainer to try to get a WNBA team in Kansas City, to this fanbase,” Mahomes said in October. “It was cool that we were able to get the soccer team – the women’s soccer team here and the Current and they’re going to the playoffs now and you see the support that they have.
“Let’s try to get a WNBA team in here as well and (it’s) kind of that same type of ownership group. They’ve done the Current the right way and I want to continue to work with them to take that next step and get a WNBA team here.”
Mahomes’ interest caught the attention of Clark, the Indiana Fever star who was the WNBA’s rookie of the year.
While on the New Heights podcast, Clark talked about why Kansas City would be a perfect destination for the WNBA.
“Patrick’s trying to bring one (to KC),” Clark said. “And they’ve got a good basketball arena there, the Sprint Center or T-Mobile or whatever.
“It’s a great spot. And the Power & Light District down there. Women’s basketball could be great there, so I’d support it.”
