BYU tried what could easily be called the worst fake punt of the 2016 season on Thursday when it tried to fool the Boise State defense from inside their own end zone.

Coach Kalani Sitake justified the move by saying at halftime “on film, we thought we had it.” Well, they didn’t have it, not even close to having it, the play failed miserably and Boise State should have had the ball on the 1-yard line were it not for a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that backed the Broncos up to the 17.

However, in a strange twist of events, that penalty actually seemed to turn the game in BYU’s favor. Boise State couldn’t get its offense started and missed the ensuing field goal. After BYU did little on offense, the Cougars defense grabbed its second pick-six of the game to take the lead 17-14. And then, BYU forced a fumble on Boise State’s next possession.

There’s no doubt that was exactly how BYU coach Kalani Sitake saw that working out.
