Jay Rodriguez’s howitzer was indicative of Burnley’s victory over Manchester United: audacious, startling and decisive.
Rodriguez stunned Old Trafford into silence with his goal in the 56th minute as the Clarets captured their first win at the ground since 1962 by beating United 2-0.
It’s also Burnley’s first win against United in over a decade, and make no mistake, it was every bit deserved. The Clarets were well-drilled and happy to let their opponents rack up unthreatening chances. The home fans booed their team off the pitch and chanted negative sentiments toward United’s American ownership, the Glazer family.
Holding a 1-0 lead after halftime, Rodriguez strode confidently into the penalty area and ripped a left-footed shot on the unsuspecting David de Gea’s net:
That goal caught de Gea off guard the same way Burnley did United. The Clarets were winless in 15 top-flight away trips in the series since a 5-2 triumph on September 22, 1962.

As for the Red Devils, well, they fall further into turmoil under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. A loss at Liverpool over the weekend demonstrated the chasm between themselves and their most bitter rival, and while United is still fifth in the table, these types of dispiriting performances keep sapping any confidence in the club turning things around this season.
The fans voiced their displeasure at Old Trafford. Burnley, on the other hand, was quite pleased with how Wednesday went.
