Bukayo Saka injury: Who could replace Arsenal star on the right wing?
Arsenal star Bukayo Saka picked up a hamstring injury in their 5-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.
The 23-year-old has since undergone surgery on his injured hamstring that has ruled him out for over two months.
Saka has been one of the most important players for Mikel Arteta’s side over the years.
His absence will be a big blow for the north Londoners, who are vying for the Premier League title this season.
Players who could replace Saka
Gabriel Martinelli seems to be the most likely replacement for Saka.
When the England international was taken off against Palace, he had stepped in on the right flank.
Arteta also trusted the Brazilian on the right wings in Friday’s win over Ipswich Town. But he wasn’t very effective in the role, which is understandable, given he has always operated as a left winger.
Another option is Gabriel Jesus, who has previously started on the right hand side for the Gunners.
But the former Manchester City star has found some form recently as a centre-forward, as he has scored five goals in his previous three matches in all competitions. So for now, Arteta is unlikely to change Jesus’ position to fill the Saka hole.
Leandro Trossard could also be a contender for the right wing position.
The Belgian has rarely been used for that role, as he has mostly operated as a left winger, second striker and attacking midfielder. But a dearth of options means Arteta could ask him to perform that unfamiliar function for the team.
And with the January transfer window approaching, the Spanish boss may also look to sign a new right winger next month.
But they are unlikely to find a quality replacement for Saka, with most clubs reluctant to lose their key players midway through the season.
