Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian international had been tracked by Arsenal prior to his move to St James’ Park as Eddie Howe continues to strengthen his team following the club’s Saudi Arabian-led takeover back in October 2021.

Guimaraes, who had been considered by both Arsenal and Everton this month, has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal on Tyneside and becomes the third signing of the new era following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood earlier this month.

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Dan Burn is expected to follow after the two clubs agreed a fee of around £13m on Sunday.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have also seen a mooted loan move for JuventusArthur Melo collapse but could finally see the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saga come to a close as Barcelona close in on a loan deal.

The club are keen to bring a striker in before Monday’s deadline but are struggling to get any deal over the line as things stand.
